Last month I had one of the most memorable weeks of my conducting journey this year, spending a week in Skopje, North Macedonia 🇲🇰 working in film music recording sessions through a collaboration between @andotherduties and @fames.institute, under the mentorship of @redmond_tim, Alastair King, and @kaveh.vares.

We worked closely with composers from the @conservatoriumvanamsterdam recording cues for short films premiering at a festival in Amsterdam. I worked with @omeremir_ (who also happens to be a flutist!!!) on films ranging from nightmares to mining diamonds, plus one cue with @luizlepchak on quirky music celebrating a historic bathhouse.

The chamber orchestra was made up of musicians from across Europe and beyond, many also experiencing recording sessions for the first time, and they were incredible, even with parts printed minutes before the downbeat!

Funnily enough, my two fellow conductors were people I had met through @ingeniumacademy years before: @mosslouis_ in Winchester in 2018, and @yajie_ye virtually in 2020. We hadn't spoken in years, and yet here we were, roommates again under Tim's mentorship, all by coincidence.

The sessions were intense: composers in the booth with Kaveh and @gabrielsound behind the mixer, while Alastair and Tim guided us on the soundstage through click tracks, composers' & film directors' ideas, and as a liaison to the orchestra. Can't wait for the Amsterdam première!

We also had workshops on film music with Kaveh, a presentation on "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" with Alastair, and got to play & conduct cues from Harry Potter, The Martian, Bee Movie, Over the Hedge, Downton Abbey, and more.

So much gratitude: to And Other Duties (including co-founder @karennibhroin), and the @famesproject, from founders to studio staff, drivers, and bistro for this opportunity... To Tim, Alastair, and Kaveh for their wisdom and for pushing us all further than we expected... And to my conductor colleagues, the composers, and the orchestra for their beautiful music, fascinating conversations, and limitless kindness.

I hope to cross paths with everyone again very soon. 🎶
