My first introduction to pangolins was a very sad one. These mysterious creatures trundled their way into popular media as the world’s most trafficked wild mammals, killed in the millions for bushmeat or cultural medicine.

Three years ago I received teaser that was curiously titled “Pholidota”, which I later learned is the scientific name for the order of pangolins. The footage, shot mostly by our main human protagonist Gareth, was spell-binding and intimate - clearly filmed by someone who knows these animals deeply and has taken time to understand their behaviour.

Watching that tease was the beginning of Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey. What I saw in those few minutes of footage was not a cowering victim on the verge of extinction, but a creature that carries incredible mystique and relatability at the same time. Meeting a pangolin is kind of like meeting a unicorn. Temminck’s pangolin’s trundle along on two legs with their hands in prayer. They look and feel like they belong in child’s animation and particularly when exposed to mud or water, will splash around in a display of unmistakable joy.

They also have a curious effect on the humans that meet them. Pangolins hold extraordinary power in African culture and are both feared and revered as mythical animals that only come down to earth during thunderstorms and anyone who has cared for them will describe how working with such vulnerable and enchanting creatures can crack open the heart of even the most hardened human.

Kulu’s debut is tomorrow on Netflix! We can’t wait for you to meet him.

It’s been a long journey for the team behind Pangolin: Kulu’s journey. Some of whom have been working on this project for more than 5 years. It was an incredible feeling to finally watch the film with an audience at our two screenings in Joburg and then Cape Town. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate together and to see an audience respond to Kulu’s story. It’s an absolute privilege to work on a project like this with such a dedicated team and see how everyone evolves through the process. The film will be on Netflix on the 21st of April!

Saturday’s Virtual Run for Education was an absolute success! 🙌🏽🤸🏾‍♀️

We had a FANTASTIC time at our wonderful gathering, spending time with our family of beneficiaries along with the runners joining us both in person and virtually (running in their own neighbourhoods across the world) 🏃🏿‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️
