The Other Old World explores the ancient wine cultures that exist beyond the regions most commonly associated with European winemaking. These regions represent some of the oldest traditions of grape cultivation and winemaking in history. Home to indigenous varieties, unique landscapes, and centuries of preserved techniques, these wines offer a glimpse into the origins of wine itself while showcasing the continued evolution of these historic regions. A journey through the Other Old World is a reminder that great wine has always existed far beyond the traditional boundaries we often associate with the category.

A huge controversy in the mid-80s led to Austria becoming home to one of the highest ratios of fine wine in the world. With Grüner Veltliner leading the way as its most recognizable grape, along with stunning Riesling, Austria makes truly spectacular whites, but it doesn’t stop there. Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt produce a wide range of complex reds, showing that Austria’s wine scene extends far beyond its famous white varieties.

Textured white wines showcase a side of white wine that extends beyond freshness and acidity, placing equal emphasis on depth, structure, and mouthfeel. Through thoughtful winemaking choices such as lees aging and oak maturation, along with the natural characteristics of certain grape varieties that lend themselves to greater weight and complexity, these wines offer a different perspective on what white wine can be. Produced in regions around the world, textured whites demonstrate how variety, terroir, and technique come together to create wines that are layered, expressive, and defined as much by their presence as their sense of place.

Orange wine is one of the oldest styles of winemaking in the world, produced by fermenting white grapes with their skins, a practice that predates modern winemaking by thousands of years. Though often viewed as a recent trend, its roots trace back to ancient traditions that continue today in regions like Georgia, while producers across the globe have embraced the style through a contemporary lens. The extended skin contact creates wines with greater texture and structure. More than a category, orange wine represents the intersection of history, tradition, and innovation, offering a perspective on white wine that is both ancient and refreshingly modern.

Chablis is one of the world’s clearest examples of how place can define a wine. Though made exclusively from Chardonnay, Chablis has earned its own identity through its cool northern climate and the region’s famed Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Its classification, from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru, reflects a deep understanding of site, where subtle differences in vineyard location create distinctly different expressions of the same grape. More than a style of Chardonnay, Chablis is a testament to the enduring relationship between geology, climate, and tradition.
