Tigst Assefa hobbled to the finish line in victory in the closing moments of last month's Berlin Marathon and was quickly helped from the course without taking a victory lap or standing atop the podium.

But on Friday in Germany, she was finally able to celebrate her 2:11:04 win as she was presented with her finisher medal by Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden as she continues to recover from Achilles surgery.

In a video Gulden posted on social media, Assefa was handed the medal in a ceremony far more modest than what she is used to, but the gesture closes a chapter on one of the most stunning sports performances of the year.

@sabastiansawe became the first man to break two hours in a record-eligible marathon, winning at the @londonmarathon in 1:59:30. He took 65 seconds off Kelvin Kiptum’s previous world record after pulling away from his rivals in the final mile.

@masai_russell ran 12.09 at @weltklassezurich, breaking the 100m hurdles world record. The highly anticipated moment came after a season already marked by 5 top 10 performance of all-time in the discipline.

@alisonsantos01_ clocked a world record 45.80 at @weltklassezurich. The 2022 world champ took the lead over the previous world record holder @kwarholm during the first half of the race and maintained his speed all the way to the finish.

@simiar2000 scored 6670 points to win world indoor heptathlon gold at the #WorldIndoorChamps, breaking @ash10eaton’s world record of 6645 points, which had stood since 2012. His performance included a world heptathlon best of 7.52 in the 60m hurdles.

@jthurdles ran 12.75 in the NCAA semifinals in Eugene, breaking @amhurdlestar world record of 12.80, which had stood since 2012.

@keely.hodgkinson ran 1:54.87 at @meeting_indoor_lievin to break the women’s 800m short track world record, improving on a mark that had stood for more than 20 years.

@__melissaj19 completed the 100m and 200m double at the inaugural #WorldAthleticsUltimateChamp in Budapest. She won the 100m in 10.62 and 200m in the 3rd fastest time in history, clocking 21.47.

Project 222 was a success. @joshhkerr clocked 3:42.66 at the @londonathleticsmeet, breaking Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old world mile record by 0.47 seconds. Josh became the first athlete to run under 3:43 over the distance.

@jakobing returned to competition at the @birmingham2026 following Achilles surgery in February, winning the European 5000m title in 13:15.29. Racing for the first time in 2026, he claimed his 4th consecutive European title over the distance.

@audreywerro ran 1:53.70 at @weltklassezurich, moving to third on the women’s 800m world all-time list after an already incredible season marked by already 2 sub 1:54 performances.

그리고 아킬레스건이 파열됐다.

2026 베를린 마라톤.
티기스트 아세파는 하프를 1시간 4분 57초,
35km를 1시간 47분 32초에 통과했다.

31km부터 오른쪽 아킬레스건에 통증이 시작됐고,
약 40km 지점에서 힘줄이 파열된 것으로 전해졌다.

결승선까지는 2km 이상 남아 있었다.
아세파는 멈추지 않았다.
마지막 500m는 사실상 오른발 뒤꿈치로 버티며 달렸고,
2시간 11분 4초로 결승선을 통과했다.

세계기록에는 닿지 못했지만 여자 마라톤 역대 3위 기록.
베를린 코스 신기록. 개인 최고기록 49초 단축.
베를린 마라톤 세 번째 우승.

결승선을 넘은 뒤 쓰러진 그는 다음 날 수술을 받았다.
2:11:04보다 먼저 시작된 것은 긴 회복이다.

RELAXING FINISH beim BERLIN MARATHON.

Was für ein Tag. ❤️

Während @tigist__assefa mit 2:11:04 einen neuen Streckenrekord lief und @guye.adola in 2:02:50 seinen zweiten Berlin-Sieg holte, haben mehr als 56.000 Läufer:innen ihre ganz persönliche Geschichte geschrieben. Und ein paar davon seht ihr hier.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch an alle die dabei waren und besonders auch an @annaxlla als schnellste Deutsche und @welday_haftom1219 als schnellsten Deutschen!

Wir hoffen, mit unseren Aufnahmen ein bisschen zeigen zu können, was alles zum Laufen dazu gehört.

Die Energie. Die Anstrengung. Der Kampf. Die pure Freude. Die Emotion.

Kurz - das Gefühl, warum wir laufen.

Denn am Ende geht es nicht nur um Zeiten.
Es geht um das Gefühl, wenn du nach 42,195 km über die Ziellinie läufst. ❤️
