Shabbat Shalom, dear friends. 🕯️

As we pause from the noise of the week, I’m sharing this carousel about Theodor Herzl and the vision he set out in The Jewish State in 1896.

Herzl wrote about a people who had tried to belong … to serve their countries, contribute their talents and preserve the faith of their fathers … yet were still treated as strangers. His answer was a political proposal for Jewish self-determination: a modern state where Jews could live freely and take responsibility for their own future.

He considered Palestine and Argentine, but called Palestine “our ever-memorable historic home.” He imagined a state with a constitution, freedom of belief and equality before the law. His work laid out a vision; it was not a complete description of every detail a future state would contain.

And his closing words remain powerful:

“We shall live at last as free men on our own soil and die peacefully in our own homes.”

This Shabbat, may we remember the generations who carried the hope of a Jewish home through difficult times … and give thanks for the freedom to welcome Shabbat in our own way, wherever we are. 🇮🇱

I’m tired.

Not “I need a nap” tired. Not “I need a vacation” tired. The kind of tired that comes from carrying grief, transition, uncertainty, and the weight of watching the world feel increasingly unhinged—all at the same time.

I’m processing the reality of leaving my dog behind. I’m preparing to leave my country behind. I’m preparing to leave the culture I’ve known my entire life behind. And while I’m trying to emotionally metabolize all of that, there is yet another terrorist attack on Jews.

So right now, I don’t have some profound lesson or perfectly packaged takeaway.

I’m just putting one foot in front of the other.

Existing in this moment. Doing the next thing. Letting myself be sad when I’m sad. Letting myself be exhausted when I’m exhausted. And trusting that eventually, all these individual steps will have carried me somewhere new.

Sometimes resilience doesn’t look like strength.

Sometimes it looks like: I’m still here. I’m still moving. That’s enough for today. 🫶

If that’s where you are too, you don’t have to turn it into a life lesson today. Just keep putting one foot in front of the next.

GRADUALISM — REVOLUTION WITHOUT A REVOLUTION?

Not every political movement tries to change society by storming the government overnight.

Sometimes the strategy is measured in years, institutions and generations.

Education.
Tarbiya.
Family.
Community.
Charities.
Civil society.
Professional organizations.
Political participation.

Layer by layer.

The UK Government’s 2015 Muslim Brotherhood Review described the Brotherhood as both a transnational network and a collection of national organizations. It said the movement’s foundational writings envisaged the progressive moral transformation of individuals and Muslim societies, and noted its historical emphasis on remodelling individuals and communities through grassroots activism while engaging politically where possible.

That deserves serious attention.

But serious investigation also means knowing where the evidence stops.

A network is not automatically a command structure.

Shared ideology is not automatically centralized operational control.

A relationship is not automatically an instruction.

And evidence of gradualism does not, by itself, establish that every Brotherhood-associated organization around the world is executing one centrally controlled secret takeover plan.

That distinction does not minimize what documented Brotherhood ideology or activity may tell us.

It makes the investigation stronger.

We examine the documents.
We establish provenance.
We follow organizations and relationships.
We compare claims with conduct.
And we distinguish what is documented from what still requires evidence.

Because if something is true, we don’t need to exaggerate it.

PRECISION — NOT PANIC.

CONNECTION IS EVIDENCE.
CONTROL REQUIRES MORE.

And never forget the distinction at the heart of this series:

THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD IS AN ISLAMIST POLITICAL MOVEMENT.
IT IS NOT SYNONYMOUS WITH MUSLIMS OR ISLAM.

TH1NK DIFFERENT.

According to the Cato Institute’s 2019 Welfare, Work, & Wealth National Survey, 62% of Black Americans reported a favorable view of socialism, compared with 36% of Hispanic Americans, 36% of White Americans, and 33% of Asian Americans.

That’s a 26-point gap between Black and White Americans—and a 29-point gap between Black and Asian Americans.

Whatever your politics, that disparity raises an interesting question: why are attitudes toward socialism so different across racial and ethnic groups in America?

Is it economics? Political messaging? Generational experience? Trust in institutions? Different experiences with capitalism?

The numbers tell us what people reported. The more interesting conversation is why.
