Photo study illustration number 3 yet again using the most talented @_topher_dude 's photography! I had painted the helmet a while back and then had the idea of it coming from a fallen soldier who was devoured by the offspring of a displacer beast! I was tempted to add some bits of blood but didnt want to take too much away from the original picture :)
The displacer kitten gave me some trouble, I wasnt sure how I wanted to create the lighting on her fur but I think I figured it out eventually!
Do you think the kitten enjoyed her meal? 😝

Ive been putting off studies for far too long. But returning to them and creating quick illustrations has been so satisfying! If you have a friend who loves photography, reach out and ask to study from their work! Seeing through a friend's artistic eye is both inspiring and motivating for both sides!

How do I go through my study process?

1) Block out big shapes and colors first! Zoom out on your canvas to avoid going into small details too soon!

2) Refine those values! They dont need to be exactly like the reference but getting close as possible helps connect the illustration to the reference image!

3) Use fun brushes for texture! Not only does this add interest, it saves time from drawing each individual foliage branch.

4) Add in that character or other assets to tell a story!

5) Make some color adjustments to make sure your character or object fits with your background. I like to color pick from what ive already painted to help with shadows and lighting!

6) Have fun and add your own touches! Studying doesnt have to be a direct copy, make it your own too! But always credit the original photographer if you can <3

I reached out to the wonderful photographer @tiltedpixelstudio asking if I could reference his incredible photos for art studies and practice! I want to do more of these for quick warm ups before working on commissions.
He has such an eye for compositions and such a talent for bringing out colors in every photo. I cant wait to reference more of his work to hone my own skills.

Im trying to reteach myself how to view others' artistic strengths and skills with curiosity and wonder instead of comparison and jealous envy. I've been ashamed of myself because of the way my brain views other artists. I dont want to be bitter towards them because of where they are in their art journey. I dont want to live in a constant state of comparison towards others. I want to connect with other artists again and help each other grow. I want to boost others up and I want to believe they'd do the same for me. I dont want their wins to feel like a personal attack or a negative reflection of my own work's worth.

It's been hard to teach my brain that my art has value too. It doesnt have to be the best, if it has to be better than anything at all is should be better than my past pieces. That means ive improved and have grown as an artist. Some days its hard to remind myself of that, but I still want to try.

Thank you again Chris for letting me learn from your art. Thank you for allowing me to practice seeing things from your perspective of the world through a camera and adding my own touch through digital paint. I hope you continue to let me borrow your photography for references to grow. Your artwork is truely magical.
