POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In all the years of adventuring, I've forgotten the most important rule of adventures.
Over the years, it's gotten harder for me to submit to the uncertainty of traveling. My thirst for spontaneity has never left me, but I think the nature of the youtube world has slowly but surely forced me to erase this element from my adventures.
Over the years I learned that if you do something spectacular at the end of your video, more people watch the entire thing. So, I started having a fixed ending for my videos.
The more thumbnails I shoot, the more people will click on my video. So, soon I started spending hours every day on the road just shooting thumbnails, rather than being present with the experience.
My planned title teases something that I haven't been able to find yet, now all my attention goes to finding that thing, all else is secondary.
The more years I spend telling stories and the more I try to master this craft, the more I realise that the true essence of travel, the beauty I experienced when I first stuck up my thumb alongside the road 7 years ago, is slipping away from me. They say that turning your passion into your job is the best way to lose your passion, and now I understand why.
And so, recently I've been trying to let go a little of all these silly and precarious things a youtuber does to optimise videos. And it's been amazing. I've forgotten how magical it is to go to a new country and plan... nothing.
I'm not there yet, but I'm finally allowing that magic to reappear on my adventures.
On my most recent adventure, my homie @tim.schuijt and I hitchhiked into the mountains of Venezuela with $250 worth of medicine, hoping to donate them to a village where they needed it. Along the way, we hitchhiked a fruit truck, had a few beers with a local named Alerio, crashed at the house of 2 awesome strangers who we befriended, and found the most beautiful village secluded in the Andes mountains. I loved every second of it. And I think that translates into the video, it's a special one. The best adventures are the ones where you let go the illusion of control.
Live on youtube now if you haven't seen it yet! 🩵🇻🇪

“I was pretty much living in a bubble. I was studying, had a girlfriend, and went to fun parties. Life was good, but I still felt like something was missing. I really wanted to get away for a while to figure out what I actually wanted from life.

I randomly chose to do a minor in Hong Kong. Four months before leaving, I started diving deep into the city and its history. I watched endless videos about daily life and the nightlife scene.

I could practically already taste the hot soup, so to speak, when I found out I hadn’t been accepted into the program. That hit me pretty hard at first, but I’m also someone who thinks in solutions.

So I thought: why not just hitchhike to Hong Kong? I’m not even sure where that idea came from, since I’d never traveled abroad on my own before.

My parents dropped me off at a small gas station along the A1. For them, it was much more emotional than it was for me. I was just excited to start the adventure.

My first ride was in a van with “Your safety is our priority” written across it in big letters. I thought, nice, this should work out just fine. And it did. I immediately loved the interaction.

To earn some extra money along the way, I came up with a drink called Cofftea, a mix of tea and coffee. I handed it out on places like the beaches of Cyprus, and if people liked it, they could make a donation toward my trip.

In Egypt, I met two YouTubers. They were cycling to Sudan and asked if I wanted to join them. I bought a bike at a local marketplace and ended up cycling with them for a month.

They taught me how to make videos, and from that moment on, I started documenting my journey and sharing it on social media. In total, it took me 13 months to reach Hong Kong.

I learned so much during that journey. When you hitchhike, you’re constantly surrounded by and partly dependent on locals, which allows you to really get to know a country and its people.

It definitely wasn’t always easy, though. There were moments when I felt very lonely. But the beautiful thing is, you quickly learn you survive that too.”

Bible Verse: “The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
Psalm 121:7–8

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for watching over my life and protecting my steps. Guide me wherever I go and fill my heart with peace, knowing that You are always with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
God bless you abundantly.
