You voted for books.

What I got instead was a reminder that the best afternoons are rarely just about the book.

Caught up with @tim_amunasha over coffee at Mad Roaster's Slow Bar, read a little of Commonwealth by @theophiluskwek , and learnt about the meaningful work behind some of the art in the café.

Good coffee. Good company. Good stories.

TEMBOK ADA KUPING
by Ryan Damasus Ng
( translated by Benedict Raphael Khoo)

Synopsis
Tembok Ada Kuping follows Adrian, a young Peranakan man who is drawn back to an old Peranakan house haunted by three Nyonya sisters. What begins as a strange encounter with ghosts slowly becomes an investigation into a buried family secret involving a hidden packet, a returned letter, a Baba Malay pantun, and disputed property documents. As Adrian discovers that he bears a striking resemblance to John, a man from the sisters’ past, the boundary between memory and the present begins to collapse.

With the help of Clara, Adrian follows the ghosts’ clues and eventually seeks out Siew Kim, a surviving majie who holds the missing truth. Through her memory, they uncover that the sisters may have died before the property was lawfully transferred, raising questions of forgery, betrayal and silenced inheritance. As the house begins to reveal what it has witnessed, Adrian must confront not only a legal and family mystery, but also his own distance from his Peranakan heritage.

The play culminates in an act of remembrance and spiritual reckoning, where the living must finally listen to the dead.

Tembok Ada Kuping is a haunting Peranakan drama about memory,
language, family silence, women’s erased histories, and the truths that survive even when people try to bury them.

The reading will cover 3 scenes. Featuring: Karen Tan, Nora Samosir, Gloria Tan, Loke Meng Chue, Fred Soh, Cara Ow and Timothy Seet.

2025 <3 the year I started streaming, had lunar new year in Singapore, went adventuring in Malaysia, backpacked the trans Catalina trail with friends, finished my first cosplay (had to be Elden Ring), got a job and moved to Monterey for the summer, was a bridesmaid for my girl Kim who had the most lovely wedding (I cried so much omg), took 2986 kids diving (with the help of all my lovely coworkers of course), got a new job on Catalina and had the craziest move over the span of like 2 days, got to show Ben why I love exploring the underwater world on the island, spent time with friends even though it will never feel like enough time, went to Singapore again to spend time with Bens family and then straight to Denmark to spend time with my family for the holidays - when the clock strikes midnight it’s not only gonna be a new year but also my birthday and I feel so grateful to have spent my year with so many lovely people and to have my bestie travel across the country to come see me for my silly little birthday <3
