Tomorrow is publication day for an absolutely gorgeous book! The art by @robincbstudio is absolutely stunning. This book is absolutely one you want a copy of! It would make a perfect gift for the art or gardening lover in your life. This was a 5 star read for me and I loved making a more free form bouquet to match- lavender, dahlias, snapdragons, gomphrena, and zinnias. My full review is on Goodreads. CHESTNUT FORAGING QUIZ!! Sweet chestnut or horse chestnut? Both can be found in close proximity across forests, parks and hedgerows.

Sweet chestnut: a husk covered in long, fine spines, two or three nuts with a pointed tip, single toothed leaves.

Horse chestnut: a husk with a few short spikes, one round glossy nut with no point, leaves like an open hand. It is inedible.

It was a real joy to hear Lane Selman and @margarett_maria talk about their new book, RADICCHIO, in Seattle at the beautiful @booklarder bookstore. Siri from @localrootsfarm was a great moderator.

I met Lane twenty years ago (gulp!) when I lived in Corvallis and I have enjoyed following her work @culinarybreedingnetwork bringing farmers, plant breeders, and chefs together. This book is gorgeous and an excellent example of next-level agriculture extension work—not only introducing a new crop to a region, but doing the hard work of connecting growers with eaters.

Radicchio is now regularly grown in the #PNW and it’s become part of our home and winter holiday meals. We grew it our farm @harmonyfields for a few years before the sheep took over (although it pairs well with sheep cheese😉). Radicchio comes in all shapes and sizes which are explained in the book, along with some amazing recipes.

Get a copy today and give this winter vegetable a try, if you haven’t already.

Last Friday, on a warm October evening, friends, family, and supporters gathered in a beautiful New Jersey garden to celebrate the launch of Flowerprint: The Wild, Wonderful World of Botanical Dyeing!

This book has been a labor of love, and sharing its arrival with the community that has supported, encouraged, and lifted me up along the way was truly magical. I can't express how grateful I am to everyone who came out to mark this special moment.

The evening was a joyful expression of all things floral, colorful, and creative, made possible by so many wonderful people. Gorgeous floral creations by @wildlyfloral.co wine generously provided by @lumscellars and @bonhomiewines, delicious food by my partner in love and life @alaindebeaufort and music by the one and only @jamesfthrone Photos by the incredible @lisawhitemanlens

Exactly one year ago today, my dream came true — a dream to share gardens across the big beautiful state of Texas in one big beautiful book: GARDENS OF TEXAS. To put the work of Texas gardeners out in the world and show off the creative, resilient, sustainable, and GORGEOUS spaces they’re creating.

Gardens for pollinators and other wildlife habitat. 🐝🦋🐞

Gardens that feed families. 🫛🍆🌽🥬

Gardens that replaced thirsty turf grass with native and adapted plants and that showcase the beautiful flora of the state. 🌼🌾🍂🌻🌳

Gardens that are artistic expressions, with cool plant collections and memorabilia that express the lives and passions of their owners. ❤️‍🔥

Gardens that are real, where the gardeners have struggled with freezes, drought, heat waves, and challenging soil — where what you see is a testament to their perseverance, not some innate green thumb. 😅

Gardens that are aspirational AND gardens that are relatable. 💛

Gardens with great ideas you can take home to your own garden, no matter where you live. 🏡

Gardens that express the diversity and beautiful life stories of Texans across the state. 🤠

The screenshot pictures here are from my appearance a year ago on @ctgaustinpbs — the esteemed PBS gardening show that was celebrating its own 30th anniversary milestone last year. What an honor to be part of their programming!

On this 1-year anniversary of Gardens of Texas, I want to express my gratitude to all the readers who’ve bought or checked out a copy or shared it with a friend. You’ve made the book a success! I’m grateful too for the support of my wonderful publisher @timberpress and the visionary editorial and marketing teams who worked on the book. And thanks again to my incredibly talented photographer @kennybraun , who traveled thousands of miles around the state with me to capture gardens from Austin to Plano, from Edinburgh to Fort Davis, from San Antonio to Grapevine, from Houston to Alpine.

None of this could have happened without the generosity of dozens of garden owners, who opened their homes and gardens and life stories to me. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏻

A full colour book that explores the life of Beatrix Potter based on the plants and mushrooms she has drawn.

This is a carefully put together book with beautiful, full colour pictures. The setup is interesting: we meet a certain plant or mushroom species drawn by Beatrix Potter - sorted alphabetically - and from there a related moment in her life is highlighted. This way, you get to know her in an intimate manner, through both small and larger moments of her life. I enjoyed reading the book in little bits at a time, like you would a coffee table book.

The book includes many lesser known drawings, sometimes imperfect ones from Potter's youth. You can clearly see how much she has grown and how her style developed. I found it interesting that Potter's life came into fruition at a later age, when she eventually married and enjoyed her own house on the countryside. Although she came from a fancy family, she was very down to earth and loved to get her hands dirty in the garden. I also liked learning that she had a 'mycology period', in which she looked at mushroom spores and had scientific discussions about them.

After reading this, I have a renewed respect for the multi-talented illustrator. I think that she was a really cool person.

Sometimes the stories have a low information density or are speculative in nature. I didn't mind this much in a book that's meant as a relaxing read and that you'd read small portions of at a time.

Recommended?
Beatrix Potter's Botanical is a beautiful book. I think that fans of Beatrix Potter, gardening, botany, botanical art and natural history will especially enjoy reading it.

A joy to live in a world where we can turn our waste into soil! If you want a guide to composting or want to fall in love with it, you must pick up COMPOST AFTER READING by @cassmarketos. It is the friendliest guide I have found.

I am still working on finding a solution for my apartment building but how cool would it be if multi-unit dwellings were required to give residents access to garbage, recycling, and compost too. (I’m looking at you @cityofmilwaukie and @portlandgov).
