“Don’t cry because it’s over; laugh because it happened.”
⬆️ adapted from project manager extraordinaire @kat_bossi’s wise words, to mitigate our intellectual mourning during the de-installation meeting for this really cherished exhibition.
💐
Alllllllll the flowers to Xandra Ibarra @lachicaboom whose performance “Nude Laughing” kicked off a spirited season of “Subvert, Repair, Reclaim: Contemporary Artists Take Back the Nude” in the galleries @mfaboston. The last day is THIS SUNDAY! 😭 catch me in the galleries Sunday a couple hours before 5pm, probably crying (and laughing) 🥲
💐
Still, when I walk through the old-school galleries, I hear Xandra’s ringing laughter. I remember the gentle crush of people following her path, out from our show into the museum writ large in all its largess. Xandra’s work inspired seismic waves of social media buzz, graced the front page of the Boston Globe, was named “Best Performance Art” by Boston Magazine in a category they created just for her!!— and I’m sure the legend will only grow! But those of us who were there know it’s more than the escándalo: the sonic texture of giggles and shrieks and creaking floorboards, the slow rush of Xandra circling Degas’s “Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer,” her lively body and yellow heels in languorous motion past rigid gold frames, and the quietly explosive climax of refusal in front of the the MFA’s big Gauguin. Here are some images that weren’t published at first, some of Xandra’s and my faves, kinda in the order it all went down— for the archive.

💐 As serious as the subject can be, @starrysyt and I had a blast curating this dreamy show. Thank you to the artists, always, and to all our co-conspirators at the MFA, especially the Public Programs, Public Safety, and Conservation collab on this performance!
