When I played my mom the original demo of “A7LA MARRA” before the album “YALLAH NARGUS” was released & before @sheymarochdi had even jumped on the track, when she heard the lyrics her first reaction was: “Razeen! Have you become a misogynist!?” I was like, whoops, no mom, I just don’t like it when my significant other screams, yells, or raises their voice at me. Anyone, for that matter, to be fair. But this moment did have me thinking. I didn’t want the nuance, quite literally, to get lost in translation. I am big on showing the complete spectrum. When talking about a group, someone who represents that group shouldn’t be left out of the conversation, no pun intended. Little did I know Sheyma wouldn’t only help tell the whole story, she would bring the song to higher heights than I could’ve ever imagined. Man, she can SING & understands darkness, playfulness & sensuality. MASHALLAH! “A7LA MARRA” marks the final music video in the ‘Nostalgia Series’ for my debut album “YALLAH NARGUS”. A 4-part series based on the Sudanese & Arabic media I was exposed to as a child. Now that the album & the videos are out, I’ll be taking a break from my socials for a bit. Need to go out there & live a little again. Hope y’all enjoy this art just as much as we enjoyed making it. Special thanks to @yunil.jeon , the director of the videos, who I deeply respect for everything he embodies. & to @kvanbelen , ‘The Master of All Rhythms’, for diving with me into this journey of self-exploration. From Sudan🇸🇩 to Al Maghreb🇲🇦! Blessed to have the phenomenal @sheymarochdi on the album, the way she elevated it exceeded every expectation.
I’ve always felt a strong connection to my Moroccan folk. Maybe because both Sudan & Morocco were once colonised by Arabs. Maybe just because we’re Africans. Either way, the studio session with Sheyma was amazing, we had so much fun. What an energy fr, mashallah Allah yi7faza. Not afraid to speak her mind. Spontaneous & playful, yet with a very clear vision. Really feels like a twin flame connection.
When we shared a stage for the first time at the @sexyland_world closing, I knew we had to work together. Both embodying a strong masculine & feminine balance, both strong in our religion yet moving with a freedom not many like us have been able to obtain. Not just a friend & colleague, but I am also a huge fan! We will both be performing on June 3rd in Rotterdam at the @habibis.world x @dunyafestival stage at Central Station. Yallah 7abaibi,

Love for me hasn’t always been easy. I’ve gone into relationships more than once without fully grasping the concept of boundaries. Not knowing what mine were, and because of that having them crossed, then resenting my partner for it when that’s clearly not fair. But I’ve also crossed the boundaries of partners countless times. Patriarchy, sexism & gender norms have all played their part here, & it takes real reflection, sadly often failure, & true accountability for us to actually be able to bring change to our programming. Not immediately getting defensive & letting the ego run the show by seeing criticism as an attack on our entire being is a great start. But when you don’t know or haven’t set your boundaries, someone else taking up that space will always leave a bad taste in your mouth, whether that is conscious or subconscious. Which is something we as men are usually not taught. As you can see, it is kind of like a double-edged sword sometimes, often keeping us in a vicious cycle. But I am grateful for awareness because that’s the biggest catalyst for change.
