Montenegro’s capital city was bombed 72 times in WW2 and the clock tower from 1667 survived it 🇲🇪

During World War II, Allied air raids leveled almost all of Podgorica. Standing tall through the destruction was Sahat Kula—an Ottoman clock tower built in 1667—which remains the historic anchor of the Stara Varoš neighborhood today.

Just 30 minutes south lies Lake Skadar National Park, Europe’s largest wetland sanctuary and home to the rare Dalmatian pelican colony, reachable via traditional wooden boat tours departing from Virpazar.

💰 Day 7 Budget Breakdown ($62 Total):
• Lake Skadar National Park Access: €5 ($5.40)
• Shared Lake Skadar Boat Excursion: €15 ($16.20)
• Sahat Kula Clock Tower Viewpoint: FREE
• Stara Varoš Ottoman Quarter Walk: FREE
• Historic Ribnica River Bridge: FREE
• Local Meals & Capital Transit: $40.40

This historic church in Montenegro is guarded by 1,544 captured enemy rifles 🇲🇪

In the former royal capital of Cetinje, the enclosure around the 15th-century Vlaška Church was forged entirely from captured Ottoman rifle barrels following the wars of the 1870s.

Cetinje also houses Biljarda Palace—built in 1838 to accommodate Montenegro's first billiard table brought over the mountains by hand.

Further south along the Adriatic coast lies Ulcinj, a former Barbary pirate enclave where street signs run in both Montenegrin and Albanian, historic minarets rise beside medieval stone walls, and the central court retains its historical title of Slave Square.

💰 Day 6 Budget Breakdown ($68 Total):
• Vlaška Church Rifle Enclosure: FREE
• Biljarda Palace Admission: €2 ($2.15)
• Cetinje Monastery Grounds: FREE
• Ulcinj Citadel & Slave Square: FREE
• Ulcinj Museum & Historic Mosque-Church: €2.50 ($2.70)

Europe’s deepest canyon is hidden inside the mountains of Montenegro🇲🇪

Plunging 1,300 meters into Durmitor National Park, Tara Canyon is second only to the Grand Canyon. The glacial-fed Tara River running through the gorge is famous for water so pure that river rafters regularly drink straight from it.

Near the gorge stands the Đurđevića Tara Bridge—partially destroyed by a local engineer during WW2 to stall advancing forces and later rebuilt—and Žabljak, the highest town in the Balkans at 1,456 meters altitude.

💰 Day 5 Budget Breakdown ($113 Total):
• Đurđevića Tara Bridge & Canyon Views: FREE
• Black Lake (Crno Jezero) National Park Entry: €4 ($4.30)
• Half-Day Tara River Rafting Trip: €50 ($54.00)

In 1452 two sailors from Perast found a Madonna icon on a reef in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro.

They began dropping stones around it.

572 years later their descendants still row out every July 22nd and throw stones into the water.

No war stopped it.
No Communist government stopped it.
572 consecutive years. Unbroken.

The island they built sits on the foundations of over 100 ships deliberately sunk beneath it.

Inside the church — a tapestry.
Woven over 25 years by a woman named Jacinta Kunić-Mijović.
When her gold thread ran out she wove her own hair into the fabric instead.

You can see the exact line where the gold ends
and the hair begins.

On the wall beside it — 2,500 silver offerings.
Each one placed by a sailor who survived something at sea.

€5 boat from Perast pier.
€3 church and museum entry.
$52 for the whole day.

Save this. Share it with someone who needs to know that Perast, Montenegro exists. 🇲🇪⛪
