🌿 my belated Aotearoa Bookshop Day visit

After a mess of a week last week, I couldn't bring myself to leave the house on Saturday for the NZ Bookshop Hop, but I was so happy to see all the wonderful posts and stories from those who managed to journey around the motu to their locals.

I first hopped off the bus and immediately into @chaptermteden for a tea top up (I saw a bunch of Anna Lee Huber's by the counter and almost started jumping for joy), and then headed to @timeoutbookstore to pick up my very anticipated @booketybookbooks subscription for @catherinechidgey The Starving Bride (cannot wait to dive into this, this will be such an incredible and intense read), and of course you cannot leave a bookshop with just one book so I was ambushed by a few more (and a cat, I've named him Timmy) before managing to pay and head back westward. I am so thrilled with the titles I managed to bring home with me, and I can see a few favourites coming from this stack 💛

Hard to believe but Asher Emanuel’s The Valley has been out in the world for almost six months now. And what a groundswell it’s produced in such a short space of time.

From the start, I knew The Valley needed a bold cover which would convey the gravity of Asher’s achievement. This book is about individuals but it also speaks to the hardship suffered by so many in the criminal justice system. The Valley called out for a visual icon that would represent both the physical location and symbolise that wider struggle.

As a designer, it is futile to set out to try to make something iconic, but the way that booksellers across the country have responded to the artwork has made me feel that maybe, just maybe, something we did here has started to take on a life of its own.

What an epic couple of days participating in this year’s @bookshopdaynz bookshop tour! I challenged myself to get to all of the bookshops on the tour before the end of the week, and I succeeded with a final trip to @matakanavillagebooks today ☀️

I not only went to a few of my favourites, but I also learnt about a few bookshops that I didn’t know existed 🙏

I meet some amazing people across the last couple of days, and everyone I talked with was super duper lovely! I love the book community 🫶

I also finished the “How to solve your own murder” book and was able to do a couple of Little Library drop offs while I was out and about 🥰

Here’s to doing more things that bring us joy!

Happy NZ Bookshop Day!!! 🩷

I have LOVED seeing everyone's posts and discovering new bookstores to add to my list to support! There are so many amazing bookish places out there, and I love seeing everyone show them some love!

Here are a few of my favourite bookstores!

📚 Timeout Bookstore @timeoutbookstore , of course! I went to their Onyx Storm release party and had the BEST time! Everyone is always so lovely, and they greet me with the biggest smiles whenever I visit! I popped in today to show them some love and grab my Penguin! 🐧 I'm SO excited for it to arrive!

✨ The Grimoire @thegrimoire_nz , my favourite special edition store!! I absolutely adore their books and the incredible care they put into their packaging! I was so excited to meet them in person at Cat's release party, and they even recognised me by name! It's little things like that which make me appreciate them even more and show just how much love they put into what they do!

📖 Unity Books! @unitybooksauckland They organised the Sarah A. Parker talk, and I had SO much fun attending! Everyone was incredibly kind, and it was such a lovely experience. I'm so glad I got to be there!

Our indie bookstores really are the BEST! There's something so special about being part of these bookish communities and getting to support the people who make them what they are

I'd LOVE to hear your recommendations for other bookstores I should visit! I'm always looking for new places to support, so please tell me your favourites!
