THE PRICE OF BEING UNPREDICTABLE

On October 21, 1992, Madonna released SEX. I was 14.

She was at the height of her success: “Vogue,” Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own and “This Used to Be My Playground.” Yet she risked it all.

From her 1984 VMAs wedding dress to “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Like a Prayer” and MTV banning “Justify My Love,” Madonna had always challenged boundaries. But SEX, created with Steven Meisel, went further. Even its sealed Mylar packaging became part of the provocation.

Was it a social experiment? How far could she push society before admiration turned to rejection?

The backlash was brutal. The press seemed relentless, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg was reportedly apprehensive. Meanwhile, Erotica—one of her finest albums, in my opinion—was overshadowed by the controversy, despite its extraordinary music and groundbreaking videos. Body of Evidence continued her exploration of sexuality on screen and Dangerous Game an Arthouse film.

Madonna seemed to move from the world’s biggest pop star to an avant-garde provocateur. I’ve always believed she was avant-garde at heart, almost the Björk of mainstream pop. She never played by the rules.

At 14, I felt like the only person in my middle school who still loved her. I felt like an outsider, but never stopped loving her music. Her unpredictability only deepened my fascination.

I’ll never forget my UK Iconer pen pal, Daniel Waters, who unexpectedly mailed me SEX. I wanted to thank him and repay him, but we lost touch.

Perhaps this era taught Madonna that an artist cannot live for public approval. The accolades and criticism are noise. Your job is to create.

Madonna was never just an entertainer. She was an artist becoming more fully herself.

She didn’t become an icon by playing by the rules. She became one by rewriting them.
