“Congratulations, that’s a beautiful Ferrari Tour de France” “Thanks, is that your 300SL? We can swap cars tomorrow if you want to try mine” Where else in the world would that happen? You can guess my answer. Another generous owner offered our friends his black ‘57 Ferrari 250GT PF S1 Cabriolet for the day: the perfect pair to sample side by side. We’re at the Colorado Grand Rally, 1,000 miles through spectacular landscapes with great roads, cars and people, and it’s as far removed from the serious regularity events people like doing in Europe as you can imagine. No timing (you even start when you want), timing, prizes or dress codes: just pure driving and having a relaxed time. I can’t believe I’ve never done it before. And the Ferrari isn’t just ‘any’ 250GT Tour de France but the very car which gave the model its nickname by winning the 1956 edition, almost 6,000km of gruelling racing around the country with Spanish playboy sportsman Alfonso de Portago at the wheel, beating Stirling Moss in a 300SL Gullwing into second place. It’s primitive and raw after the 300SL Roadster (seven years its junior) but just listen to that V12 howl. Easy gearbox, comfortable ride, predictable handling, non existent waterproofing and brakes which keep you guessing in the wet, but absolutely intoxicating. It’s possibly the best car for this event after a 250GTO. First world imaginary choices… Another friend let me try his Jaguar D-Type, as close as you’ll get to a Spitfire for the road, a car which twitches with every blip of the throttle and sounds like a low flying aircraft too. Tomorrow’s the last day, and as we pulled into the open air car park tonight (warned not to leave any food in our cars as it attracts bears) we checked and realised that it’s 70 years today since De Portago roared away from the start of that 1956 race in this car. My Italian co-driver Giorgio had his first TdF drive and summed it up as “like losing your virginity to Marilyn Monroe”. Probably the sort of thing that would have happened to De Portago 😉 #ferrari250gttourdefrance #mercedes300slroadster #jaguardtype #colorado1000 #justdriveit

The ‘discreet’ @dkengineering drive wasn’t as discreet as intended, but that didn’t stop them from bringing along some mega cars. #bigsur #carweekforever

Pagani Zonda Roadster S - Do you like the famous Zonda wing mirrors? Well you’ve got this one to thank! This is the Zonda Roadster S 042, a car that trail blazed one of Zonda’s most instantly recognizable features. When the first owner commissioned his car, he desired to improve upon the car’s aerodynamic profile. Working directly with Horacio Pagani, it was decided the front splitter, rear diffuser, and most notably the wing mirrors would be changed. The mirrors were relocated from the top of the a-pillars to the front fenders. This allowed additional clean air to reach the rear split wing, something the high-mounted mirrors had minimally interrupted. While initially intended to remain an exclusive one-off feature, Horacio kindly requested the owner allow him to feature these new mirrors the upcoming Zonda F model. And the rest is history! Fun fact, in some very early Zonda F internal sketches you’ll find a high-mounted version of this mirror design. How crazy is that?! Are you a high or low mirror fan? 💬👇 #Pagani #Zonda #RoadsterS #PaganiZonda #AutoTunes

Had a fantastic time last weekend at the annual C.A.R.S. Motoring Festival at McPherson College, home to the country’s only college where you can get a four year bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration technology. The show features a handful of the nations rarest cars and GM always brings out a couple of concept cars from their collection. Here are just a few os the cars that caught my eye while there. . #carshow #mcphersoncollege #autorestoration #classiccar #vintagecar . @mcautoresto @mcphersoncollege @carsclubmc
