Sneaking in an ‘controversial’ 🚨 NWA 🚨 with this IX&DAO 5303 that I recently received in a trade. I use the word ‘controversial’ because you can obviously see that this is a homage of the Serica 5303 (to the name, even!). Its one of the few odd examples that I can think of where Chinese companies somehow feel there’s a market for targeting the microbrand scene. Most peculiar of all, this one was able to receive so much traction and feedback from the watch community at large such as reviews from Random Rob and JOMW. The credit all goes to Serica for conveying their distinctive design language well and seeing how incredible this homage wears on the wrist I now have my sights set on purchasing a Serica in the future. Particularly the Ref. 8315 in ‘Desert Red’ because just see for yourself how mesmerizing it looks! 😍 Onto the food – today we have one of Hong Kong’s local specialties which is Char Siu or Cantonese-style Chinese BBQ Pork. Devouring it is a quintessential part of the dining experience in Hong Kong and similar to how most restaurants will serve it, the one I ordered came with grilled chicken and two nutritious pan-fried eggs, all generously drizzled in soy sauce for that kick of flavour. ❗️New Watch Alert ❗️ The Cartier Tank Must SolarBeat ~large~ I genuinely don’t have any other reasonable explanation than simply the stars lining up for me on this one. To those that have been following along, you know I have a deep love for Cartier. My love for the brand was poured into the Cartier Tank Must SolarBeat ~small~ The week before my small vacation, my partner and I went to a Cartier AD new to us and I wanted to ask about the bracelet for the small Tank. We spent the next hour or so with such an amazing sales associate and he had stated that he can source me a bracelet for it when I am ready. Then a thought dawned on me that if I were to order this bracelet, I’m solidifying my commitment to the small tank. I got reminded of the one gripe I had with the watch being that it’s not the easiest thing for me to read the time. I got the small version knowing that I wanted to stay closer to the original proportions of the Tank but after a good year with it, I realize that I’d much rather have a Cartier watch I can use as a watch. Such a “duh” moment for me but what can I say I love original design concepts 🤷🏻‍♂️ Fast forward back to that AD and I told the sales associate about my predicament of commitment and I said something like “I may just want to get the Large Tank even if it’s not SolarBeat” to which he said “We actually have a Large SolarBeat in the back I think. We got ONE yesterday I can check if you want.” I agreed wholeheartedly and my pulse was racing. The associate brought this piece out and I just knew I had to have it. He had said the different associates at the AD were shocked to had received one being how scarce the supply has been on these pieces. He had said that they were surprised that it lasted that long before I stumbled upon it~ I admit I love a bit more how the small looks in pictures on my wrist but the real life experience of wear goes to the large by a mile. Whilst brainstorming what kind of shots I can fit into my current 3-style rotation I thought of hopping into the #watchesandfood bandwagon which is perfect since I can just boot up my phone camera and get a shot whenever mealtime comes around. Of course, with my wrist and watch away from the food and not in it like I know a lot of people do. 😂 This was taken during one of my dinners a month ago and I had Farfalle (bow-tie pasta) with Chicken & Roasted Garlic in The Cheesecake Factory. I don’t often eat pasta, nor do I have cravings for it, but the amount of flavour that bursts inside my mouth at each bite makes me keep coming back for more. Not to mention the sharing portion is massive as well even for a table of two. This place is now very high up in my list of personal favourites because we in the #watchfam always love looking for ‘value for money’! 😋 The MoonSwatch Mercury on the @horusstraps fitted rubber strap is also a fitting companion when I need a stealthy grab-and-go. Seiko Try-On(s)! #3 Having been introduced to the brand from its Seiko 5 lineup with the likes of the DressKXs, SSK GMTs, and older models, ‘High-End’ Seiko(s) that cost above US$2,000 or above remains a foreign concept for me (barring Grand Seiko, of course) and this rings true for the re-issued Marinemaster Diver from 1965 (SJE099) that I’m sporting on the wrist. 🌊 Don’t get me wrong, the watch is a knockout with its light blue dial and navy bezel insert that transforms in shade when hit by light. The horizontal stripe pattern complemented by polished edges delivers a premium appeal and seeing the circular date window at 4:30 wasn’t as off-putting as I thought it would be. Its also the thinnest diver from Seiko sitting at 12.5MM, meaning there is nothing to complain about in terms of fit and finish. 😍 Amidst all the golden points however, I still struggle to comprehend entering Seiko into the equation when pondering a purchase in the US$3,000 price bracket where this Marinemaster is positioned versus Longines, TAG, and Tudor which have long been on the top of my list. Seiko Try-On(s)! #2 This one is a sweetheart and possibly my most loved model from the existing Seiko 5 lineup. Seiko just continues to pump out different iterations of their SSK GMT and this particular release, the SSK027K1, is a limited edition done in collaboration with Yuto Horigome, the first-ever Olympic gold medalist for skateboarding. 🔥 The usual stainless steel case and bracelet is dressed in stealth black, and the polished center links on the J-style bracelet presents a classy aesthetic. The duo-colored bezel, now in Blue/Purple, looks spectacular and is reminiscent of Rolex’s Fuchsia palette. I’ve already tried on the SSK GMT so many times now and the fit has always been perfect, so all it takes for me to pull the trigger is for Seiko to release a model so captivating that my wallet automatically opens itself. Seiko Try-On(s)! #1 Coming in with the first Try-On series for 2024 (didn't realize I've slacked off for 1.5 months now..) is Seiko! One of the most beloved watch brands from the land of the rising run by the enthusiast community – whether for its affordable segments, bottomless modding possibilities, or just ranting about their horrible QC measures. 😂 On the wrist I have a SRQ037 from the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer collection. I’m sure it won’t be the first model coming up to mind when you hear Speedtimer (because the Seitona exists, and is superior in every way) but I chose to try this one on precisely because I don’t hear about it much. Maybe for good reason too. At an MSRP of ~US$3,000 and a thickness of 15MM, this one gets a pass from me. Too thick, too large, and too expensive.
