What happens when we expect young people to change, while everything around them stays the same?

Saplings uses four young people caught within the youth justice system to explore incarceration, intergenerational disadvantage, relationships, opportunity and the structures that can make breaking cycles extraordinarily difficult.

But its greatest strength is that these ideas never overwhelm the people at its centre.

These kids are funny, frustrating, vulnerable and flawed. They want their mum. Somewhere to call home. The Easter Show. A bowl of noodles. They’re not reduced to villains or transformed into innocent victims — they’re young people who are still becoming who they are.

And the production makes that beautifully visible.

Tiny green saplings grow against a stark, institutional environment. By the end, they’re bigger - but still small in their stark surroundings.

Everything around them remains exactly the same.

If we expect young people to emerge from incarceration changed, Saplings leaves us with a much harder question:

What are we giving them to grow with?
