How wonderful 90s fantasy is: a blend of gothic, medieval and fantastical elements.

Among the many knights depicted on cards, the two versions of the Order of Leitbur deserve a mention.

This is one of the two variants featured in Fallen Empires by Bryon Wackwitz, a fantasy artist and illustrator who, in addition to collaborating with Wizard of the Coast, has created artworks featured in various magazines, book covers and role-playing games.

First release Fallen Empires, 1994.

What a trip down memory lane! The card, the art, the illustration it all takes us back to another era.
Drew Tucker the master of watercolors, has given us a real gem that will go down in the game’s history.

It was such an iconic card that the term “Dandân” has come to refer to the “Forgetful Fish” as well, a community created Magic: The Gathering format invented by Nick Floyd between 1996 and 1997. It uses a single 80card shared blue deck and graveyard, featuring 10 copies of the classic fish creature Dandân and eight copies of Memory Lapse.

Wizards of the Coast embraced the fan favorite format by releasing an official Secret Lair Dandân Deck in March 2026 with Floyd's collaboration.

The rest is history.

First release Arabian Nights, 1993.

Aaaaah, dragons! Creatures that are as beautiful as they are difficult to play: high mana costs, effects that often even harm their owner, in short not among the most versatile creatures.
They remain, however, undeniably visually striking and iconic, and some are still played today, such as the Eternal Dragon, Rorix, Dragon Tyrant, and Golden Drake.

Today we’re looking at a dragon that doesn’t see play in any format (there are a few Premodern decks, but nothing spectacular), but that deserves a mention: Rathi Dragon.

Designed by late Christopher Rush, a legend among Top 25 mtg artists, this masterpiece is undoubtedly one of the game’s most iconic pieces of art, so much so that it was even used for 9th Edition booster packs.

First release Tempest, 1997.
