Lithuanian designer Barbora Žilinskaitė's exhibition at Friedman Benda’s Los Angeles gallery features contorted furniture forms with bodily nuances, blurring the lines between animate and inanimate. Titled, ‘Chairs Don’t Cry,’ the vibrant anthropometric pieces are crafted from reclaimed sawdust and serve as chairs, mirrors, shelves, and tables. Inspired by her struggles in design school, Žilinskaitė's work embodies a sense of uncanny, reflecting her journey to find her voice in functional art.

@barbora_zilinskaite creates very “bodily” furniture—sculptural pieces seemingly made of plump, cartoonishly exaggerated human limbs that fit together like puzzle pieces. After feeling stifled by the confines of traditional design education, the Lithuania-born talent sought to imbue everyday objects with corporeal features that pique the imagination and spur the uncanny feeling that the objects we surround ourselves with may have a life of their own. See them at “Chairs Don’t Cry,” her solo exhibition at @friedman_benda Los Angeles, until March 30.
