Every 2 months @drakemusicorg holds DMLab at which musicians, designers, experts, and technologists share their ideas about accessibility and music tech. Managed to get to my first one in October at which @megan_steinberg Michael Neokleous and @onj_andrelouis all discussed use of AI in their practice/research. Fascinating and thought-provoking, and great to catch up with @richard_llewellyn and @timyatessounds Really interesting to hear about AI’s application to help in accessing music-making for individual artists, but also in community contexts such as by those living with dementia. And then there’s the exploration of AI as a thing in itself which is in contrast to or in dialogue with composers and musicians. Really fascinating, and for me just starting to open up the nuance of this area.

Myself and @sarahticho took a trip up to Grenwich the other week, to hang out with @timyatessounds and see some of the cool spatial audio tickery he's been working on at @bathwaytheatrecompany

We left very inspired to do something ourselves.

Life has been quote relentless this summer for the pair of us, but looking forward to really have some headspace soon to create something with my number 1 collaborator.

Now that my main shows are over, I wanted to share more of my process with you over on my @patreon

Starting with a bunch of free/cheap spatial audio tools and plugins I use for my shows/installations

I'll follow up with some example files of my workflows and more deep dives into the hardware setup I use alongside how I incorporate my @mi.mu.gloves too!

Check it out via the link in my bio 🔗 @noellenoelleno

And let me know what you'd like me to share and any spatial audio plugins you recommend for me to try! 🎀

Here’s a short extract from Friday’s gong and voice jam at Are You Listening: Experiments in Resonating Sound. Sami Fitz and I were playing off each other, and I was grateful to be able to sing at all, having caught a nasty cold with sore throat only 48 hours before the show.

This is something you really don’t want when your voice is needed for performance. When the sore throat arrived late on Wednesday night, I blitzed it through the night ALL NIGHT with salt water gargles and sinus rinses, and drank gallons of neem leaf and thyme tea, sucked honey and lemon lozenges and more. I continued the whole of the next day, and by Friday morning the scratchy dry throat was gone. There were more breaks in my voice than usual, but I was able to perform; for which, much gratitude and relief.

It was a really enjoyable experience to be a part of this event, and I can’t wait to do it again. #improvisedmusic #vocalimprovisation #soundart #alimariatuma #hushhour

A moment of anticipation captured while I was waiting for last night’s show to begin; captured by @thisway123 Patricia McGahan. What a night. An eclectic, dynamic, hypnotic, energising cornucopia of sonic delights. So happy to have been part of it! @arconicsound @timyatessounds More images and footage to follow. #experimental #liveimprovisation #collaboration #electroacoustic #hushhour

The inharmonic components of metallic sounds can alter our sense of space and reality, taking our brain into a specific place of vivid images and strange perceptions, guiding us into acoustic states of consciousness 🫀

But it all depends on what you’re looking for…

Come for some brainwashing today to our night of experiments in resonant sound 👽 at the Bathway theatre @uniofgreenwich

Doors open at 7.00 pm

It was great meeting Tim Yates at DMLab Festival.

We had a really interesting discussion around accessible instruments, adaptive interfaces, disability-led design and emerging creative technologies.

I also had the chance to demonstrate my gesture tracking prototype and talk through some ideas around visual performance, accessibility and expressive control systems.

Always genuinely inspiring to meet people who are pushing accessibility and innovation forward simultaneously.
