‼️ovarian cancer Part 5: (actually this is good for every single human on earth to know! Ovaries are not!)
✅ what is a SCREENING test vs DIAGNOSTIC test.
✅ learning about this is gonna help you not only understand insurance coverage better,
✅ but also potentially save you from a host of anxiety!
✅ AND help you understand where we can be proactive so that we can find and fix things earlier

🧿 stay tuned for two more parts to this that include “why can’t I use CA 125 and why can’t I use a pelvic ultrasound as screening tools?”

😳 you’ll understand the difference between screening versus diagnostic, and why it has to have specific parameters like sensitivity and specificity and positive predictive value and negative predictive value!

😘 listen up, learn what your screened for, know the signs and symptoms of things you’re not screened for, understand your family, history, together let’s be proactive, not paranoid so that we can find and fix things early!

‼️ovarian cancer part 4: familial/inherited cancer genes

🧿just 2 weeks ago— a woman wrote to me here saying that a first and second second-degree relative had had prostate cancer… She was never alerted to the fact that this could mean a familiar Gene and only found out about her BRCA Gene mutation once she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer…

💙 while it seems that the current data suggests that 15% of cancers are due to a family history/jean – this number could be rising as we learn more about cancer and which ones are related (i.e. the guidelines change involve as we learn that, for example, prostate cancer may increase the risk of carrying a gene when it’s metastatic or in more than one family member, and that gene could also increase the risk of Ovarian Cancer among others)

🧿 finding out this information, should not lead to fear or paranoia, but should rather help people make informed decisions about prevention or help them understand symptoms for earlier diagnoses…

💙 I asked all of my patients about their family history and if they say “nothing” then I reiterate “MOM/Dad/aunts/uncle/siblings/grandparents/children – any breast/colon/ovarian/uterine/melanoma/pancreatic/prostate/kidney/G.I. cancers”

‼️ because certain cancers or certain clusters of cancers should absolutely prompt the consideration of genetic testing— it is actually one of the most cost-effective and relatively affordable tests that one can do in America! Look for a genetics counselor at your hospitals, hematology onc Office or consider reaching out to @telleveryamazinglady and we can help connect you to a genetics counselor!

🧿 as I say to my own patients – not everyone has to do the testing, but everyone deserves to know that they have the option!
