J B Murry (1908-1988) was a fascinating artist.
William Arnett’s essay on the Souls Grown Deep website ( @soulsgrowndeepfoundation ) tells Mr. Murry’s story well.
People sometimes ask if the story behind the art is important or if the work should just be allowed to stand on its own.
In the case of J B Murry the story is critical to understanding his symbology and the spiritual motivation that led to the creation of his work. But his artistry also stands independently. These are among the 20th century’s great works of abstract art.
An understanding of context adds layers to experiencing his work.

@soulsgrowndeepfoundation.
From William Arnett’s essay:
“Murray had little formal education. He probably never learned to read or write. After a vision in 1978, he created his own style of cursive writing with which he inscribed many of his drawings and paintings. Murray’s writing gave him a power he believed could be used for the benediction and protection of himself and others. The inscriptions seem to have had specific meanings to him when he wrote them. There are some consistencies in his script, including a core group of marks, and at some future time perhaps it will be deciphered to some degree. It is entirely possible that Murray could read some or all of his own “writing.” He kept a bottle of what he called “holy water” on a table beside his bed, and raised it skyward when praying in the presence of others. During the last few years of his life, when Murray was being described in some circles as a “mystic,” he received a number of visitors who requested ritual “readings” of the water. Murray accommodated them.”

For the last 5 years, I have been working on one of the most important projects that I might ever work on, and today I get to help introduce it to the world. Today, Paul and I, along with his brothers and family, and many many contributors, but particularly, @jacksonmarkovic, and @gloryfires, and @music.decker for all of their help with the organization, inventory, record location, art handling and general setup of all the systems that create an arts foundation with a collection of this magnitude…get to announce the Tinwood Foundation, which will steward William S. Arnett’s art collection into the future. Here is the repost from our Instagram @tinwoodfoundation:

"We are very happy to announce that @thearnettcollection is now @tinwoodfoundation. Since 2019, this Instagram has featured art, artists, and events having a relationship to Atlanta collector William S. Arnett (1939-2020). Upon his death, Arnett bequeathed an extensive art collection to the creation of a non-profit organization, the Tinwood Foundation. The Foundation promotes understanding and appreciation of the Black art, artists, and culture of the American South. Using its collection, and in partnerships with other institutions, the Tinwood Foundation develops innovative programming to enhance the history of American Art.

In collaboration with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, in Atlanta, the Tinwood Foundation’s first programming initiative is an exhibition of Black Southern artists called, “Reclaiming History: Selections from the Tinwood Foundation”, opening to the public on November 8th, 2025.

🇺🇸 Ronald Lockett (1965 - 1998) was an artist who died of AIDS in Bessemer, Alabama. He was 32 years old.

Featured in our print collection is Fever Within (left), a powerful work by Ronald created in response to his HIV diagnosis in the mid-1990s. One of several iterations, this piece presents a solitary figure seated against a distressed metal backdrop—capturing the pain, betrayal, and emotional weight of illness and isolation.

Part of a deeply personal series, Fever Within speaks to vulnerability and strength in the face of uncertainty. Like much of Ronald’s work, it’s both intimate and universal, turning reclaimed materials into lasting expressions of truth and resilience.

Available on archival paper or stretched canvas. When you purchase a print, you support Black artists from the American South through a revenue-sharing model that ensures artists and their estates share equally in profits.

▫️don’t ever say there’s no good new music.

There’s a weekly avalanche of it and humans continue to create quality art. One of these humans is Lonnie Holley.

Admittedly he wasn’t on my radar (despite the fact that he’s clearly a legend) - but hey it’s never too late to learn!

Shoutout @thedavidmurray for alerting us to this incredible new album @lonnieholleysuniverse just dropped today.

It’s an intensive pastiche of elevated compositions with Lonnie’s intimately impactful spoken word over them. I can’t stop listening to it.

It’s out now on @jagjaguwar and also on the PHILM New Music Playlist™️ - get into it.

It was an extremely fulfilling weekend in nyc getting to attend the opening of Thornton Dial, The Visible and the Invisible, @hauserwirth. It was a very joyful experience seeing the pieces in such a distinguished gallery with so many people that I care about. It has been a long time coming. It was also a joy to see so many of the artists from the collection represented in the gorgeous Alvin Ailey exhibit at @whitneymuseum including, Thornton Dial, Purvis Young, E.M.Bailey, Bessie Harvey, Joe minter and Lonnie Holley. If you happen to be in NYC over the next few months and like looking at art, both of these shows are spectacular. @thearnettcollection @hauserwirth @whitneymuseum @tinwoodfoundation

“Her public facing artistic practice evoked an outward agency, wherein she professed her deep Christian faith and created a community of sculptures and painted figures to combat her isolation—yet her use of text, anagrams, and symbols suggest a further subversive capacity. Implementing obfuscation as camouflage, a visual tactic to aid life, movement, and information to pass untargeted, Smith’s compositions became a site of investigation, holding the potentiality of inconspicuous intent hidden among her conspicuous creativity.”
