DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR SURVEYS!

The Chicago Dancer Pay Transparency Project was created in 2023, after Darvin Dances artistic director had a conversation with one of her younger dancers about which companies paid their dancers and which didn't.

She had built up a resource list that she shared with any new dancer she met in Chicago, but she was frustrated that dancers still had to rely on word of mouth to learn what a company paid, rather than finding that information listed alongside the audition itself.

The goal of the Chicago Dancer Pay Transparency Project is to encourage companies to consistently note their compensation practices in audition notices and hopefully become an obsolete resource overall.

Until that happens, the CDPTP will continue to survey the Chicago dance community and advocate for pay transparency.

UNPOLISHED RIYAAZ 02

TMI Alert

September is PCOS (Now PMOS) awareness month. Having PCOS is hard and you'd think that being a dancer would make it more manageable. As if having the presence of that physical activity in my life is supposed to keep my weight, metabolism, and insulin resistance normal. But that's just not the case.

I still think those of us who have PCOS, endometriosis, or other reproductive and metabolic conditions barely feel understood by other fellow women, let alone dancers.

Personally I've found that PCOS isn't taken seriously until a woman is trying to conceive. I've found that womens' health is typically centered around fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause.

We're just now starting to talk about these things in the general female health community, but this conversation is very much necessary in the dance community too, and honestly, as someone who wants to do something about this, I'm not even sure where to start.

So here are my questions to all dancers and women. How can we make the teaching, learning, and performance spaces more accommodating for dancers? How can we support the teens and young adults who wish to excel further in the art but still need more breaks that a typical healthy dancer?

Perhaps it's time to think about and engage in meaningful discussions on this.

A Boy Named Sue!

I grew up going to the rodeo in my grandparents’ county every summer, and the clowns were always my favorite part. Shoutout to the Moses Lake Roundup. This is a tribute to those rodeo clowns I got autographs from, and to my dad, who played Johnny Cash throughout my childhood. I miss my summers in Grant County. I miss being a kid singing in my dad’s car. I am quite the boy named Sue.

Thank you @tinydanceschicago for a lovely evening with brilliant people! Tiny Dances is a really special event I’ve had the pleasure of being an audience member at and now a performer in. Apply for their future shows!
