Another camp out with the fireflies. There was much to celebrate this weekend: Juneteenth, the Summer Solstice, and Father’s Day! Of course Jay was behind the camera, so I included a throwback. This particular land, so peaceful now with its bioluminescent light show and cacophony of frogs, insects, and owls, once had Union soldiers march across it during the Civil War. There are two small cemeteries here, one with past land owners and the other with those who died enslaved. Last weekend when we camped here, in the deepest hours of the night, I awoke to a single marching drum, a repeating pattern of staccato beats that my groggy mind registered as a battle drum call. We were in the middle of no where so I can’t explain what I heard (or possibly dreamed). I listened intently for it this time, but it never came. I wonder if those departed souls of the enslaved buried near us saw the celebrations on this land and across the land this weekend. Are they surprised to see my white family joining in to celebrate their freedom from slavery? Are they surprised to see all shades of people come together to shout, “Black Lives Matter”? Or are they heartbroken by the continued oppression and mistreatment that remains rampant to this day? Things have come a long way, but still have so far to go. So, on this Father’s Day, I think of my own loving dad, and of my husband who is a wonderful father to our children, but also of those enslaved fathers of the past whose children were taken from them, whose families could be brutally divided at an owner’s whim. And to the fathers today who are incarcerated unfairly or unjustly. And to the fathers who have lost their lives simply because of the color of their skin. Lets do all we can to help the world be in a much better place by this time next year.
