Knowing that the #pandemic has kept many in our community unable to visit, we thought of bringing the Sims Library of Poetry to you! We will be doing weekly features of various titles from our vast collection of books. When we can all move more freely in the near future, we hope you will come and open these #books in person!

For the month of March, we will feature a noteworthy title from our #Anthology stacks every #tbt Thursday

Week 1: Do you remember the 90s!?!

Book Title: LISTEN UP! SPOKEN WORD POETRY

Author: Zoë Anglesey (Editor);
#YusefKomunyakaa (Foreword by)

Publisher: One World/Ballantine; 1st edition (March 30, 1999)
Paperback: 224 pages

POETS FEATURED:
@TishBenson, @Ava_Chin,
#SuheirHammad, @JessicaCareMoore, @CarlHancockRuxOfficial, @SaulWilliams and more

"Today, the poetry scene flourishes at New York open-mic spots like the @NuyoricanPoetsCafé, Brooklyn's YWCA Tea Party and Harlem's Sugar Shack. Progeny of hip poets--the Beats of the 50s and protest poets of the 60s and 70s--these up-and-coming literati cast their diverse spells of word beats inspiring young contemporaries in Cleveland, Ohio, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta; later branching out internationally to poetry circuit venues in Tokyo, Rio de Janiero, London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Istanbul."

--Zoë Anglesey

"Listening to the new poets, will we ever be the same? This anthology has a stake in freedom, is a proclamation for poetics. Zoë Anglesey is a literary abolitionist--she breaks through the barriers that separate us from the new poetry."

There is light in this world! Let it find you. Let it fill you to overflowing. This season we have been shuttled into, pushes any notion of uncertainty so much closer to its cold hard cousin—chaos. This pandemic and political crisis stampedes us all up against visceral and sometimes gruesome form(s) of randomized, tidal terror. The ecologies of self, home, family, friendship, work, school, pleasure, purpose we had depended on for a measure of peace and normal and safety have all been rattled and in some cases profoundly disrupted. When I think of this era of resistance a defining element is the intentional ways we are learning to center rituals of self-care and joy in the midst of radical and even sometimes revolutionary commitments to fight and organize against the relentless forces and injustice intent on assaulting our bodies and our freedoms. We are learning this work of joy, compassion, meaning, empathy, and purpose can and must occupy the same center out of which we manifest our rage and grief, pain, hurt and defiance against the violence that surrounds us in a white supremacist, capitalist, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, system gone bacchanal and rogue.

Yes even in this horror and terror we can and we must manifest our hope, joy, love, pleasure and communion. The light in Us must not be constrained by the impotent tiny-minded indolence of one puny man or the political cultural systems that would amplify its grotesque delusional imaginations against us.

Let us fight! Let us resist. Let us know that we know our purpose our gratitude our deep seated celebration of the lives we have been given, of the victories and challenges we have won, of the destiny that visits us every day we are given a breath to help us one step toward the promise and vision Creation has deposited in Us is our salvation. We are, everyday a mighty magnificent force for change.

I’m grateful for the lives and loves, challenges and strengths that have changed me; I am grateful for any measure of light and love I’ve been able to offer to the beings of this world.

Thank you from my highest self for ur well wishes! The future belongs to Us.

The term struggling artist is not a term creatives use out of pride. It is a term others use to define them, no matter the art form. Simply because they chose the non-traditional path. Artist develops the path that provides the world beauty of imagination, and the space to interpret their perspective. I tagged some visual artists and others that are clever with their hands that I know in real life that truly welcomes your support. The struggle doesn't have to be real.
