“Men and women for and with others.”

This is deeply ingrained in me from the College of the Holy Cross. On campus, it was a foundational standard for how professors, coaches, and students interacted, and a core piece of my alma mater’s Christian mission. It’s something I’ve been living more intentionally each day as I become more conscious of who I am and how I can impact the people around me.

Cresthooch 127 was surreal. I didn’t run an ultramarathon this weekend. I didn’t crew a team or set up the race. I simply showed up for others.

I shared my energy. I tried to observe, acknowledge, encourage, support, and congratulate. To remind someone who was hurting that they weren’t alone. To turn a moment of weakness into a moment of strength. To be a friendly face in the middle of the chaos. To celebrate someone when they needed someone to celebrate with. And to close the gap between isolated runners in the mountains and fellow human beings.

To be for and with others.

Sometimes it simply means showing up, giving what you have, and helping carry someone else when they need it.

Humans are capable of extraordinary things. To the men and women who took on 127 miles, I tip my cap to you.

First ever ultra-marathon trail race. I had so much fun spending time with friends and met some incredible people. I’d like to thank my step dad and uncle for driving out to help me during my run and drive me back to camp after, couldn’t have done it without you guys. Also huge shoutout to my team. Alan, Jack, Cole, you guys killed it and i’m glad we got to experience this as a team.

Thank you Hunter and Alana for hosting this event and making this all run smoothly.

This experience gave me confidence in my ability to navigate difficult situations alone. I was scared the entire run and freaked out a couple times because I went off track. I figured it out, I overcame the fear of being alone in a mountain range in the middle of the night, which is an environment completely unknown to me.

If there is anyone seeing this who has doubts about taking a big step forward in the right direction, remember that on the other side of that scary feeling is exactly what you have been looking for. Do it for yourself, learn from those around you, and remember that being kind and showing love costs nothing and is one of the best parts about being alive.

Embrace the rhythm.
