With just a camera, a single light and an idea this was the first music video I shot almost 15 years ago to this day. Looking back at the subject matter, this nation has not changed one bit (America). I never thought I would create content that sadly is still relevant to this day. #KRTS #socialjustice #SonyFS700 #policebrutality #myheadisjumping

Well friends, our time together last night at SUNDAY SERVICE was hella fun! Such a strange and beautiful little bit of raucous reverence. Deep gratitude to all our sisters and brothers and siblings who made it out and for your generosity of spirit. It’s gonna feel proper good to cut the food bank a check!

And also such wholehearted thanks to all of the artists and volunteers who made it possible! I hope you guys feel aglow in your hearts because you’re good people.

Based on turnout and overwhelmingly positive reactions and feedback, there’s probably no way around doing another one. Not sure when or where but I have faith it’ll happen.

I wasn’t able to snap pics because I was rushing around but here are some. If you have more, please share!

Love you fools,
The Good Rev. N.M. Langston

Joining us at SUNDAY SERVICE is Paul Nunn! One of the most influential artists in Seattle will be live-painting during our fake church service and will auction it off, with the proceeds going to the badasses at West Seattle Food Bank. You could actually own a work by Paul Nunn!!

One of the reasons we put “Service” in the title of this show is that one of most important aspects of art is that it is an act of service, a form of social, spiritual, and psychological medicine. You’d be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and beloved servant of the arts in the entirety of our city than Paul. Come on down to our fake church and see what this contemporary luminary cooks up!

It’s this Sunday, 7pm at Kenyon Hall and if you wanna come, better snag your tickets now! Fair warning!

Kenyon Hall was built in 1916 and the “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ inside is almost a century old as well, having been built in 1929. And man! Both of these old beauties look fresh as a daisy. They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

Hope you’ll join us for SUNDAY SERVICE at Kenyon Hall on April 19th at 7PM. With REPOSADO, Tekla Waterfield, Tito Ramsey, Paul Mullin, Dujie Tahat, Susan Rich, Paul Nunn and more!

Tickets in our bio or the comments. Buy em now!

At SUNDAY SERVICE, one week from tomorrow, we’ll be singing together. Our “hymns” aren’t church-y songs but hopefully songs most people know. It’s like gigantic group karaoke, I guess. It was a fascinating project, picking them!

Our fake church will be singing, “Lean On Me” (by Bill Withers), “Take Me Home, Country Roads” (by John Denver), “Stand By Me” (by Ben E. King), and “What A Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong).

Gosh, if you listen to the whole stadium sing Country Roads in Munich when the Seahawks played the Buccaneers there, you’ll get it. But this cover by Toots and the Maytals always makes me so happy. John Denver sings West Virginia. Toots sings West Jamaica. We’ll be singing “West Seattle.”

Tune up that voice in the shower babe! It’ll do your heart some real good to come down and sing together with us! I just straight up changed my whole day for the better, singing these all a few times in a row! And deep thanks to @titoramsey for accompanying us on the “Mighty” Wurlitzer Organ!

(Also curious as to what songs you’d add as “hymns” for our future services)

SUNDAY SERVICE - Sunday APR 19th, 7pm, at Kenyon Hall. Get your tickets now! Link in the bio or the comments.

SUNDAY SERVICE was born from grief and despair. Each morning I’d read the dumpster-fire headlines, then step outside for coffee and watch my homeless neighbors sifting through trash for food or anything useful. Even on sunny days, everything felt excruciatingly dark. What’s to be done?

Obviously, throw a party! I’m not a church-going man, but I yearned for that connective hub: hope, community, the opposite of loneliness. A show dressed as “church” might work, even fake and religion-free.

But it had to combat the darkness haunting my bones. So we give everything to the West Seattle Food Bank! They’re down the street, getting folks food and clothes, keeping families housed, ensuring kids have weekend meal packs. These frontline workers are absolute heroes.

THE GOAL: Sing together. Dance together. Give thanks. Laugh. Experience absurdly good music and poetry. Lift each other up. Walk away lighter-hearted, knowing our party money turned into fresh groceries for neighbors in need.

THAT’S IT! A badass, sacred, wild-ass, sweaty, jubilant party where everyone feels high and leaves lighter, knowing they conjured groceries onto neighbors’ tables. That is ART AS MEDICINE.

Let’s GO! Lock in your tickets now. Link in bio or comments! xoxoxo

There is something so real and tactile and satisfying about putting up real flyers. My buddy Jeremy Buben was just saying that there’s something hopeful about them. In an age of algorithms, they are a message in a bottle… that some stranger would just wander by and think, “why not? I think I’ll go to that!”

This flyer is based on an old school interfaith broadside poster from a service that was held in the early 60’s in Detroit. I like imagine people wheat-pasting them up back then.

I like remembering that after my grandpa died, grandma paid me $50 to drive out to their house and knock down a rotten old tool shed he’d built out back. Grandpa was a Baptist pastor and started 25 or so churches in the Northwest after he got out of the army. When I got inside the tool shed, I found that most of the boards he used were old church signs. Like “Sunday Service, 9am, Preaching by Rev. Floyd Merrill.”

Not a church-going man myself, I took a crowbar to that shed and ripped it apart good. But when I pulled one of the floorboards up, I saw a skunk there, reared up and staring me dead in the eye.

Man! I tore out of there across the yard like the devil and grandma laughed and laughed. I like remembering her laughter.

Get your tickets to SUNDAY SERVICE on April 19th at Kenyon Hall! Link in the bio or comments. This one’s gonna be something WONDERFUL and all the profits go to the West Seattle Food Bank!

Blessings and low-fives

I always forget this but, historically, all the shows I’ve helped throw over the years have been something I HAVE needed personally. I suppose that’s true of many artists. A poet writes the poem she needs to read. A musician writes the song he yearns to hear.

In this case, I feel the deep need for “church.” No, I don’t particularly feel the desire to get saved or converted to one religion or the other. But in my bones, I feel a very strong desire to be in a building that looks like a church, with a bunch of kind friends and strangers, singing together and dancing together and saying what we’re thankful for aloud and in public. I need to give praise, even if I’m sometimes uncertain what it is I need to praise. I need someone to shake my hand and welcome me into a space of honesty and joy.

Well! We’re doing it! In two weeks, I dearly hope you’ll join us for SUNDAY SERVICE at the Chapel of Immaculate Bombast: a make-believe church, welcoming folks of all persuasions and faiths, or none at all. There will be an organ and candles.

Tito Ramsey is one of our best. A local boy, he grew up in Indianola, just across the water from Ballard, but I didn’t meet him until New York City, when we were both living in Brooklyn. At the time, he was making international waves with his band LEGS. This one speaks softly and has an obviously tender heart but you wouldn’t know it when he’s fronting a show because he’s adept at blowing up a jubilant frenzy in a crowd.

Tito is the type of person we need in Seattle. Aside from badass shows and a raft of exquisite forthcoming songs, he teaches at our schools, leading after school classes in digital music production and stop motion animation at elementary schools throughout Seattle and the Kitsap Peninsula.

Moreover, Brother Tito’s generosity of spirit has led him to signing on as the Music Director for our SUNDAY SERVICE show at the Chapel of Immaculate Bombast (April 19th at Kenyon Hall). He’ll be playing the hilariously cool Mighty Wurlitzer organ for our make-believe church service. When he first got to play around on it, he said “it feels like piloting a spaceship!”

Get your tickets now babes. There aren’t so many left. It’s a sliding scale from $15 - $250 because all the profits of our fake church are going to the West Seattle Food Bank to help folks get meals, stay clothed, stay in their houses.

If you haven’t heard of Tekla Waterfield, you’re just a touch behind the times (which is fine) as this dazzlingly angelic songbird is utterly beloved in the city of Seattle. In an act of such generosity and benevolence, Tekla has agreed to sing us some songs for SUNDAY SERVICE, our fake church with deeply authentic feels.

Because you love yourself, you owe it to your own heart to bathe in the splendid ambrosia and salt of Tekla’s tunes. You’re gonna feel better and be a slightly better person after hearing the poignant honey she spills into your eardrums. Our fake congregation is over the moon that she will be joining us and granting us her gift.

Listening to Tekla Waterfield sing to you will not fix all of your problems but it certainly will make life feel a touch easier to live.

Ticket link in our bio or by looking up Sunday Service on Eventbrite or looking at the Kenyon Hall events page. All profits go right to the West Seattle Food Bank!
