Birthday party with the theme: 1980s pro-natalist Mormon musical movie where the “bad guys” are teens who talk about zero-population while they smoke cigarettes in their top-down Jeep Wranglers?

Even I, Outta Syte—first of her name, Queen of the throwback, slayer of disco beats and jive men—need to remind myself of the joy I offer to others and, very importantly, myself.

Damn, what a time full of thrills this past week!
@werestillhere.nyc -- the monthly show for drag & performance produced by @thatryanoverthere

I got to hang out with my buddy @cheeksthecharmer and had the true honor of being part of his amazing amazing act.

It was The Ancestral Circuit show, co-hosted by @alissaorgperformanceart and Sammy, full of acts that might bring you laughs, make you cry, and put extraordinary things in front of all our eyes.

I have a lot of chosen family but only one true sister. Blood of my blood—the only woman in this world birthed in my primordial soup. A woman who, like me, resists what is often a woman’s birthright: self-hate.

This is no small task for any woman, let alone those who come from a line of polygamists, widows, and sex-trafficked girls. Our family history contains rape and femicide. One of the less-horrifying obituaries is that of our great-great grandmother. The headline: “Aged women closes long, useful life.”

As a teenager, our great-great grandmother traveled with her widowed mother from Sweden to Nebraska, crossed the plains to Utah, and was coerced into polygamy by her husband. Beyond the “15 children she bore from this union,” her obituary does not mention any personal details but this: “She was an ardent church worker.” Labor, sexual oppression, utility. What is an obituary if not homage to birthright?

Kiana was born 70 years later. Here are some personal details: everyone wants to be around her. She is compassionate, whip smart, and uproarously funny. Her humor is sharp but never caustic. Kiana lives without guile, perceptive and present, with a memory like no other. In a Tuesday conversation, she recalls things you once did in the back of a Nissan Quest, sounds you made in 2002, jokes you wheezed through in a bunk bed.

To be with Kiana is to find yourself saying, “I forgot, but with you I remember.” With Kiana I feel the power of women’s memory. It revises birthrights, and brings what is dead back to live a second time.

Happy birthday to Kiana, my Lazarus girl. You’re the one I want to go through time with.

Drag Class in @rollingstone 😳

for the past 3 months, my @baxarts drag class welcomed reporter @davidmackau into the intimate classroom walls. I made him participate (as Clara Kunt💅🏼) and he did a beautiful job capturing this brilliant cohort’s 12-week transformation.

truth is, this article dropping and the ensuing big0ts in the comments made me want to hide under a rock (look mom, I have h8rs!). but I’m so proud of this class, every student who has come thru it and the way the alum community lifts each other up.

I’m humbled by every guest teacher (this time was @queerlyfemmetastic & @vanillaheavy 🥰) and @baxarts staff member (special shout out to my sis @roosyelloww 🙏🏼) and the cheerleaders that keep it going.

I started this class to create the space of warmth, welcome, radical queer acceptance and artistic rigor that I wanted when I started doing drag in 2016. no container is perfect, and I’m constantly pushing myself to improve it. but if half of what the students and alums interviewed in this article said about the impact of this class is true, then this is beyond what I could have dreamed it would be 🥹 I hope you read it!

here’s to my chosen fam for holding it down in the @rollingstone post comments, trans kin throughout time who deserve spaces to self-express their shininess, every queer putting their identity on the line to burn down empire, and my wife @mxraradarling who made our rescheduled show at @houseofyesnyc happen and who sees a star in me even when I’m crying in the tub 🩷
