A huge thank you to Nina and the @tagatamoanatrust for the ngāue lelei ensuring everything ran smoothly this weekend.

And thank you to everyone who showed up. We were overwhelmed with the number of people who came to the opening on Friday night and also the talanoa on Saturday. We hope you enjoyed the talanoa as much as we did.

The exhibition will be running at the Fibre Gallery for the next several weekends so if you're in Ōtautahi or nearby please drop by.

FAKAFE’ILOAKI:
An introduction to some of the members of Kava Book Club and insight into their creative practice

Taukei (TK) Hards.

Lapaha / Otahuhu, South Auckland.

Currently Representing Manurewa via Lapaha.

TK Hards is an multimedia visual artist, born in South Auckland and raised in Tonga. With Tongan and European heritage he creates work that shows the intertwined and often clashing ideas that come from being both Coloniser and Colonised. TK’s Art exemplifies lived experiences that are portrayed in a multi-disciplinary way, through the use of colour and layered imagery. Drawing on his experiences, TK has pushed the melding of diverse ideas and visual language to create a unique and contemporary idea of what Tongan Art is. Inspired from growing up in both Tonga and South Auckland, TK creates works that draw from his past in Graffiti and his current life as a Visual Art teacher. Art being at the forefront of his world, creating visual symbols of current space and time is often what completes his works.

KBC (Kava Book Club) hosted @lisiatew during his recent visit to Aotearoa. Lisiate created the Toki Ukamea podcast which retell’s the story of William Mariner, a young english boy who spent several years in Tonga during the the early part of the 1800’s.

The podcast is available on Spotify and is a valuable insight to 19th Century Tongan life.
