POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last evening was the 46th Anniversary Celebration Gala of the @howland_cultural_center held in the Waterfall Room of @roundhousebeacon . A beautiful evening. There were as many people there as were not there. With new faces and even a helper accessibility dog! For someone with mobility issues who can’t walk a mile of Main Street, let alone one block to a coffee house (she gave me permission to speak to advocate for drive-thrus). Helmed by one of the leading historical preservationists in Beacon, Theresa Kraft @tkraftdesign , the evening honored two people who brought significant impacts into Beacon: Neil Caplan of the Bannerman Castle Trust (BCT), @bannermancastletrust introduced by Len Warner, President of the BCT and Board Member on Beacon’s Planning Board; and Phil Ciganer of @townecriercafe , introduced by @thecostellosmaverickpop . Each introduction provided new insight into known stories and contributions of the honorees. Neil said he was “honored to be honored,” as he hadn’t been honored before, and thanked his wife, who he said was his world, and choked up as he said that. Will try to publish the videos in full on ALBB, in case they get cut off here. But so you can have a glimpse into the event.

Musical performances by Jessica Welsh (Always Patsy Cline), Tom Chapin and Friends. Emceed by Eli Walker.

Beautiful afternoon to visit Aunt @tkraftdesign at her post at the Howland Cultural Center.

I’m in love with this building. Something about old, intricate buildings has always fascinated me and this building is no exception.

I love that my aunt has done so much for the preservation of the center- as only such a talented and connected artist can do. She walked me through the history of the building and found

The HCC was built in 1872 as a subscription library. Throughout the 1920s it was one of only two remaining public subscription libraries in the state. Almost 50 years later, the library moved out when it outgrew the building. Since then it has been used as a cultural center, hosting various visual and performing arts events.

The architect of the HCC was Richard Morris Hunt - and his work can be seen in many familiar places. Hunt helped shape New York City with his designs for the 1902 entrance façade and Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and many Fifth Avenue mansions since destroyed.

Hunt is also renowned for his Biltmore Estate, America's largest private house, near Asheville, North Carolina, and for his elaborate summer cottages in Newport, Rhode Island, which set a new standard of ostentation for the social elite and the newly minted millionaires of the Gilded Age.

Thanks for the visit today, Aunt Theresa. Sorry it’s taken me too long but we’ll be back!!

Calling holiday shoppers! Come to the @howland_cultural_center in #BeaconNY and treat yourself to some fine art photography (by yours truly), pottery, woollens, beeswax candles, silver jewelry, and more, all from local artists and makers. You can also marvel at the building itself; the main hall was just named after Florence Northcutt, the Howland’s steward for many, many, many years. I haven’t been part of a holiday gift show in many years, so I’m especially chuffed. (And now I have a sign! LOLZ)

The Centennial of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier history talk will be held this Tuesday, Oct 25 at 7pm @howland_cultural_center. Join BHS Past President Denise VanBuren as she discusses her journey across France (as President General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) to recreate the 1921 events that resulted in the dedication of the Tomb at Arlington National Cemetery. You may be surprised to learn two Beacon connections to this memorial that honors our nation's unknown war dead.

This program will also be livestreaming at 7:00pm at www.beaconhistorical.org/calendar and the recording can be found on our website a few days after the meeting.

A beautiful day for the unveiling of Kyle’s Military Tribute Banner. Was so nice for us to be together and honor Kyle and his service. Super proud of this guy and his 5 years of service with the USMC, including a tour in Afghanistan.

Kicking off my day with the newest issue of The Colourist and a hot cup of cocoa with extra whip. How about you?
The Colourist is a unique Bookazine (editorial like a magazine, no adverts like a book) dedicated to sharing Annie Sloan’s passion for colour. It is a collectable, bi-annual publication featuring 132 carefully curated pages bound in a covetable cover.

In Issue 5 we focus on heat and spice; the theme centres on a joyful Chalk Paint® palette of Barcelona Orange, Emperor’s Silk and Antoinette and features exclusive photography from Annie’s trip to India in January 2020. Also featured are “30 Top Tips For 30 Years of Chalk Paint®”, creative lockdown projects by you, home tours and how-tos, career-changing women and the resurgence of chintz. Discover how furniture artists have been inspired by vintage colour theory diagrams, and travel the world of colour – literally and figuratively, from the spice markets of India to the Swedish Archipelagos.

This issue also features a vintage-style Cavallini-inspired colour chart poster, designed by Felix Sloan. #anniesloanchalkpaint #anniesloan #thecolourist #beinspired #morningvibes #happycocoa #thinkhappythoughts #knottooshabbyny
