Juneteenth: Freedom, Empowerment, and Civic Engagement

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we honor the enduring spirit of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865—the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a powerful reminder that freedom must not only be declared but also protected, exercised, and advanced.

Today, the Phi Beta Sigma Civic Center stands as a modern expression of that responsibility. Freedom is most meaningful when individuals are informed, engaged, and empowered to shape their communities. Through voter education, civic engagement resources, and nonpartisan information, the Civic Center helps ensure that every eligible citizen has access to the tools needed to participate in our democracy.

The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Theta Lambda Sigma Chapter recently hosted their annual scholarship banquet at Topgolf in San Jose, celebrating academic excellence and investing in the future of the next generation. Through this year’s initiative, the chapter awarded $9,250 in scholarships to 10 deserving members of the Class of 2026.

In addition to the scholarship awards, the chapter demonstrated its commitment to education and empowerment by hosting two financial literacy seminars, one for parents and another for the scholarship recipients, to help equip families and students with valuable financial knowledge for the future.

The event also highlighted the spirit of collaboration within the Divine Nine, as members of the local Zeta chapter joined the celebration to support the brothers and scholarship recipients.
