“At first, we gravitated toward each other because some of us showed up with guitars, microphones, drum machines, samplers, and an eagerness to play. I found myself wanting to skip over the small talk and serious art conversations. Instead, I wanted to float around, tell jokes, and be silly. I gravitated toward anyone with a similar attitude, especially those who, like me, were easing the anxiety of getting acclimated by dancing every night. We could all feel a certain hesitation that came with being at such a prestigious artist residency, and together we shared a truth: we didn’t know “what to make.” Instead, we wanted to listen to loud music, start a band, wear wigs, and give in to the freedom of experimenting and playing without any expectation of producing something.” - Black Magic

My heart is so full. I had one of the best summers of my life, and have made new friends that I will love forever at Skowhegan. I never got to go to summer camp as a kid, and this was the best version of that experience I could ever ask for: to be in community with the most beautiful, talented freaks. Trying to quantify this experience is impossible. I feel so lucky that I got to meet all of these wonderful people. I got to swim and dance every damn day. I worked on ceramics and paintings and made frescos. I started UFO club. I taught a fermentation workshop and made the most delicious black berry soda from berries we picked. We did psychic experiments, drew together, did weird performances, played games. I am so lucky and grateful.

I feel it all
June 5 - September 22, 2026

Whereas fine arts were historically turned upwards, focusing on poetic depictions of deities and affects, photography started down to earth: its function was to capture, be it culture or nature. The appropriative mode of photography combines facts with theatricality, like in the case of portraits of royal families, or documentation from naval expeditions, where the camera inadvertently absorbed the coloniser’s eye. Whether the historic accuracy of an event, a record of a kinship, or the architecture of a milieu, photography fuses veracity with forced perspective. Through the lens of technique and style, the eye is confronted with a trace of memory and sensation that conveys a certain presence, but that does not offer understanding beyond the given frame.

Während die bildende Kunst historisch nach oben gerichtet war und sich poetischen Darstellungen von Gottheiten widmete, begann die Fotografie am Boden der Tatsachen: Ihre Funktion bestand darin, festzuhalten – sei es Kultur oder Natur. Der aneignende Modus der Fotografie verbindet Fakten mit Theatralität, wie etwa in Porträts königlicher Familien oder in Dokumentationen von maritimen Expeditionen, bei denen die Kamera unweigerlich auch den Blick des Kolonisators aufnahm. Ob als historische Aufzeichnung eines Ereignisses, als Zeugnis von Verwandtschaft oder als Dokumentation eines sozialen Milieus – die Fotografie vereint Wahrhaftigkeit mit erzwungener Perspektive. Durch die Linse von Technik und Stil wird das Auge mit einer Spur von Erinnerung und Empfindung konfrontiert, die eine bestimmte Präsenz vermittelt, das Verständnis jedoch nicht über den gegebenen Bildausschnitt hinaus erweitert.

Organisiert von chess club und kuratiert von Amanda Weimer werden Filme von vier Künstler:innen der Ausstellung I feel it all gezeigt: Collezione Nancy Delroi, Matt Gess, Tim Hardy und Luna Mahoux. Im Anschluss gibt Amanda Weimer eine Einführung in die Ausstellung.
