I want to see things. I want to know things. I want to say things. I want to show things. I’m also a big fan of death metal.

My teacher, Lowry Marshall passed away last week.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

You changed my life, Lowry.

I tried to back out of your Acting Class and you wouldn’t let me. You told me, “Stace, you’re scared.” You were, of course, correct. I was terrified.

I stayed and took every class you offered. Playing in your “Design for Living” and “The Seagull” taught me to be a little braver. You gave me the opportunities that shaped my life. Creating my solo show Senior year about my Chinese heritage and how it was passed down to me by my mother and the ghosts of my grandmothers- was one of the greatest gifts I’ve given my family.

You encouraged me to go to Williamstown with the hunch that Darko Tresnjak and I would like each other. He cast me as Time, which was life-changing. I spent three summers at Williamstown. It became my path toward lifelong friendships and NYU Grad School.

I remember when Mary Zimmerman’s “Metamorphoses” debuted on Broadway—you saw it and told me that I would be in her world. Several years later, it was Mary Zimmerman that gave me my first Equity job at The Goodman.

You actually saw the last show I performed. I was 5 months pregnant. After the show, we went to Velselka and you told me about motherhood and gave me the little nudge to teach. You talked about how teaching was the connective tissue between family and creative rigor.

CoVID hit a year later—and I had the unforeseen opportunity to teach at the University of Evansville. So many friends and colleagues have come through this program. This job has been a godsend during CoVID- reliable income and creative stimulation. You were right, teaching is pretty great.

My last conversation with you was a few years ago when I picked your brain in preparation for this job.

I teach your Art Exercise.

Joe uses some of the Improv Games you taught him at Western MI! Can you believe you also taught my husband?!

Your fingerprints are all over my life.

A picture of you at my Brown Commencment in full regalia sits on my office desk next to a letter from Zelda Fichandler. The two matriarchs of my theatrical life.

I love you always and forever, Lowry.
