This is my first ever photography exhibition. 🥳

We’ve been working on this project for over a year now. From the initial concept and moodboards, through research, case studies, planning, production, and finally bringing the images themselves to life.

The Black Bodies, Masculinities, and Sexual Politics exhibition explores Black masculinity, sexual politics, and the ways Black men continue to navigate legacies of hypersexualisation, fear, projection, and fetishisation. The work asks how Black masculinity is embodied, understood, and spoken about within a society still shaped by colonial ideas and fixed narratives around Black male bodies.

Working with Dr Shardia Briscoe-Palmer, my part was to translate the themes, stories, tensions, and emotions emerging from the research into a visual body of work that could speak for itself. It’s probably the most intentional and emotionally layered work I’ve created to date.

Over the course of the year, I couldn’t tell you how many ideas came to me while I was in the shower, at a set of red lights, playing catch with my nephews, or right as I’m about to fall asleep. A lot of care, thought, and conversation went into every image, but even as the shoot date went along, the ideas themselves evolved, changed and adapted.

I’m incredibly proud of the final outcome, and even more grateful to the people who helped make it possible.

Thank you to Shardia, Tiago and the rest of the team at University of Nottingham @beth.woolley for her incredible assistance throughout production, and to the models, @callmekhari, @tmlehin, and @aaron.asher_ , who each brought something unique to the gallery.

I genuinely hope this is the first exhibition of many. 🚀

(Will share the images in a separate post too)

Black Bodies, Masculinities & Sexual Politics

The exhibition is about the exploration of Black masculinity, sexual politics and the ways black men continue to navigate legacies of hyper-sexualisation, fear, projection & fetishisation.

After working on the project for just over a year, it’s a huge relief to finally be able to share these images.

For this shoot I wanted to keep it as minimal as possible. Shot on PORTRA 400 using nothing but a reflector and natural light.

We made sure we found a studio with a big window frame to let in that natural light. Then figured out the timings of when the sun would hit perfectly, this meant we had to work fast, as clouds were still visible during the session and definitely added the pressure.

Often working in a studio means you can take your time, but this was a challenge and honestly we smashed it.

Big up @tonesetstudios for the space 🙏
