Last month I had the great pleasure of being the @womanzonecapetown Book Club Guest Author of the Month!
It was so lovely to engage with the ladies in their beautiful library at the Artscape.

We were able to reflect deeply and honestly on some of the thinking, awakenings, pain and privilege that culminated in my book.

You can be successful on paper and still feel that something is missing.

For years, Tebele Makhetha measured success through qualifications, promotions and greater responsibility. She was accustomed to setting goals, working hard and trusting that effort would lead to results.

Then a cancer diagnosis and divorce challenged the life she had carefully built, forcing her to reconsider what strength and success really meant.

Her experience taught her that not everything can be solved through hard work or careful planning. Sometimes, strength means accepting what you cannot control, asking for help and recognising when pushing through is doing more harm than good.

As she puts it, “I no longer want to prove how much I can carry.”

What is especially powerful is that Tebele has not become less ambitious. She now wants her ambition to make room for meaningful work, writing, making an impact and being present for the people she loves.

Her story is a reminder that success does not have to come at the expense of your wellbeing, relationships or the life you want to experience outside your career.

Perhaps the real question is not how much more you can achieve, but whether your definition of success still reflects what matters to you.

Last week was such a beautiful week for Apartheid’s Granddaughter!

It started with a wonderful discussion at the @woordfees and ended with a deeply enriching book and anti-racism conversation at @iamastcypriansgirl
We were joined by parents, staff and heads of surrounding schools. I left feeling so incredibly encouraged and grateful. Not just for the support, but also for the opportunity to engage in a difficult but urgent conversation on anti-racism in schools with key stakeholders.

I have had the privilege of working with @iamastcypriansgirl for a while now and I am so encouraged by their genuine commitment to anti-racism. Thank you so much for having me and trusting me in your space. I do not take it for granted. 🙏🏼

It’s been an incredible ride. I’ve learned so much, and received amazing feedback so if you haven’t picked up a copy and/or know someone who could use the support, please don’t hesitate.

As the launch media and initial hype inevitably settles, we enter the next exciting phase to continue the work and deliver on the promise I made to myself; to get this resource into the hands of those who need it most.

With October recognised as #MentalHealth awareness month, it’s fitting that I will be launching an independent website: Hellinsideourheads.co.za soon, to share more resources, snippets and support as well. Stay tuned for details. We aren’t stopping or slowing the mission.

Let’s keep the conversations going. Thank you to everyone who has supported “The Hell Inside Our Heads” and the cause.

The feedback I’ve received has been overwhelming and validating, and highlights the need out there, but there is clearly more work to do.

I know there are many others struggling mentally, and who could benefit from this read. As the initial launch hype and media begins to settle, let’s keep the momentum going.

Website launches in October and more resources will be added there too. From there, and for each two books I sell directly I’m able to give one away. If you’d like to purchase any in bulk for your own company or staff please also DM me until the site is live.

Hoe versoen jy jouself met jou komvandaan en die politieke erfenis wat jou oupa agtergelaat het? Dit verduidelik Lidia Rauch in haar boek, Apartheid’s Granddaughter, wat deur Tracey MacDonald Publishers uitgegee is.
Lidia se oupa was Fanie Botha, een van die langsdiendende ministers in die ou NP-regering. Sy skryf baie toeganklik oor hoe hierdie politieke erfenis haar as mens gevorm het en haar van vroeg af op ’n baie meer inklusiewe leefwyse en politieke denkrigting gestuur het. Sy is ook baie eerlik oor die trauma en pyn wat sy as kind beleef het, omdat haar ouers geskei is nadat haar dominee-pa ’n buite-egtelike verhouding gehad het, hoe sy nie gekoester gevoel het nie en wankelend, tree vir tree, haar plek in die lewe moes vind.
As student het sy ’n gesprek tussen haar ma en oupa gehoor wat haar laat besef dat Suid-Afrika se “enequality mostly runs along racial lines because of our history. It’s one thing to see and feel injustice in the abstract – to empathise with people out there. It’s far more confronting when those same issues appear at your own table in your own bloodline, in your own being. That Christmas eve marked the shift for me: from caring about equity in principal to taking responsibility for where I come from – for reconciling, and for seeking restitution.”
