POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This Memorial Day, we honor the generations of Tennesseans who gave everything in service to our country.

We are revisiting a feature on Dr. Chris Magra and his students at the University of Tennessee. Through the Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War (@tnandwar), they preserve letters, photos and oral histories of military personnel dating back to the 1700s, keeping these stories alive for our community.

Their work brought history to Sharp’s Ridge Veterans Memorial Park with permanent educational wall boards, giving hikers and families the chance to read firsthand accounts of the local soldiers who served. Dr. Magra often hears veterans and families say their stories do not matter, and this center is a powerful reminder that every story, every sacrifice and every legacy counts.

Read the full feature through the link in our bio and discover how this local team keeps our veteran history alive.

Jonah Webb, a transfer student preparing to graduate this week, has demonstrated what it means to be a Tennessee Volunteer. And his time at UT isn’t over yet! 📙

After graduating with his degree in history, he plans to return this fall as a graduate student in the secondary education program with future aspirations to teach high school U.S. history.

Outside of the classroom, he spent his time playing trombone in the Pride of the Southland marching band and serving as an intern with the Center for the Study of Tennesseans and War. During his internship, he researched and created dozens of new biographies for Tennessee veterans, gaining valuable public history and teamwork experience.

Congratulations and welcome to the alumni family, Jonah! 🎓

During the Thanksgiving season we are proud to honor Tennessee’s veterans and the work of Dr. Chris Magra (@magrachris) and his students, whose dedication led to the creation of informational boards about Tennessee veterans at Veterans Memorial Park at Sharp’s Ridge. Previously, the park’s name was its only tribute to veterans, but now these boards share stories of courage, resilience, and sacrifice. 🇺🇸

This November, we’re especially thankful for the veterans who shared their stories and the families who entrusted their legacies to the UT Center for Tennessee Military History. Each story, artifact, and photograph connects us to the bravery of generations past.
