🧭 Diver Spotlight: Tyler Newman — @tnewdiver
📍 Sooke, British Columbia
👨‍✈️ RCN Clearance Diver | Tech + Rebreather Diver | TDI Instructor | DAN Instructor Trainer

From the frigid Atlantic waters of Halifax to deep technical missions and cave dives in Hawaii, Tyler Newman’s journey spans over two decades of pushing boundaries beneath the surface.

⸻

🗺 How It Started:
Tyler got certified in Halifax back in 2000 and officially began his Navy dive career in 2006. Since then, he’s grown into a Clearance Diver for the Royal Canadian Navy, a certified TDI Instructor, and an ongoing technical/rebreather explorer.

⸻

🌌 Unforgettable Dive:
“There’s a cave in Hawaii—not many know about it. I passed through a tight restriction into a room full of untouched stalactites—like underwater icicles. Only a handful of divers have ever seen it. That moment stuck with me. Now I’m chasing places few have ever gone.”

⸻

🔧 Gear Talk:
Tyler rotates between military sets like the Interspiro, shallow O2 units, ECCRs, and Kirby Morgan helmets. On the personal side:
✅ Regs: Apeks
✅ Harness: XDeep (for sidemount and OC)
✅ Rebreather: Megalodon CCR

⸻

🇨🇦 Dive Bucket List in Canada:
📍 Gunilda Wreck
📍 Isle Royale
“These historic wrecks are top of my list. Canada has so many epic sites, it’s hard to choose just one.”

⸻

💡 Cold-Water Advice for New Divers:
✔️ Find an instructor who vibes with you
✔️ Don’t rush—enjoy every stage
✔️ Ask real divers for gear advice
✔️ Practice regularly
✔️ Be confident in your skills—and have fun!

“Hindsight is 20/20—I could’ve avoided some headaches early on.”

After a few days of diving in the Okanagan we walk away being able to now teach in both official dive languages (backmound and sidemount) under the mentorship of @craigwerger at @doublearrowdiveco we passed our Technical Sidemount Instructor Course. Thank you, Craig, for the outstanding course! With the always excellent buddy, @tnewdiver.

If you want to try an alternative way of getting into doubles, give me a shout, and let's chat.

**Congratulations to Aaron Speare and Tyler Newman** from Victoria on successfully completing their **TDI Sidemount Instructor program** at *Double Arrow Dive Company* in West Kelowna, BC!

It was a pleasure diving with such dedicated and professional instructors. Not only are Aaron and Tyler TDI technical diving instructors, but they’re also full cave divers actively exploring the underwater cave systems of Vancouver Island.

Wishing you both continued success — I’m looking forward to seeing you underwater again soon! #sdi #sdidivers #tdi #tdidivers #xdeep #okanagan #sidemount

@tnewdiver wanted a green and blue splash on his new Pioneer Reel. Looking resplendent in all its glory it’s in the post to him.

Something tells me that more people have been to outer space than in these tight holes.

Hawaii was a blast! Perhaps not a premier cave diving destination, but certainly a good cherry on top of the excellent diving the Island of Oahu has to offer.
