My college paid me to make a quilt???
Let me tell you about it!
Rewind back to May 1st 2024, I am about to graduate college and I receive an email from the Director of Human Ecology (Dr. Melinda Anderson) saying she had an idea for a quilt. The idea was sparked after a discussion with my advisor, and professor for many of my college courses, Dr. Hannah Upole. They discussed the quilt I made about my hometown of Kingston Springs which led to Dr. Anderson wanting a quilt about the School of Human Ecology (HEC), which is the school I earned my degree in. I was ecstatic! I wanted to represent every area of HEC well, as it is such a diverse school to be a part of and I had come to know so many amazing people across all of the concentrations. The areas of study include; fashion merchandising and design (what I studied); child development and family relations; child life; food, nutrition and dietetics; and housing and design. A wide range of careers are within this school! I saw this quilt as an incredible opportunity to use my skills to create a visual story of the amazing work students from this school go on to do. I chose blocks that showed either the tools students use in their field of study or symbols to represent the environment they strive to foster in their careers. We are all so different across concentrations, yet so interwoven in our relationships with people. I am honored to have created a piece of art that captures what we all do at a quick glance (or a long one because you can get lost in the detail, believe me). To all of my HEC people, I hope you love it <3
I am so grateful to have been part of this program and to have faculty encourage creative curiosity by making opportunities available within our curriculum. The Appalachian Center for Craft changed my life. Huge shout out to @woodrena for instructing 2 amazing courses I took and challenging me in my independent study. Making quilts for a living wasn’t a career goal of mine 4 years ago, but I am glad it became one. Being an artist is valuable, necessary, and a career. Whatever creative venture you find yourself drawn to, keep following it. You never know what it could lead to :)
