POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is kinda weird for me to savor an experience & batch of photos for a little while before sharing it, but it has felt like I’ve been legit savoring what will 💯 be a forever cool memory for me:
🧿Seeing my first Nudibranchs (colorful sea slugs) for the first time with mine own eyeballs!🧿

Nudi: bare, & Branch: lungs,
ie glamorous, sometimes psychedelic looking shell-less marine sea slugs with naked gills!

Thanks to an invite from Toad Photography Josh during his BirthWeek🎉 a few weeks back, we met out at Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay early in the AM for a low tide sea slug treasure hunt.

But not just ANY nudibranch search…
Josh invited his old adviser Dr Terry Gosliner, Senior Curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the California Academy of Sciences…. 🌎…Oh just one of the WORLD’S leading nudibranch specialists, having discovered close to 1500 new species throughout his career, that’s all!!

Ya gotta listen to Dr. Gosliner’s recent interview on the awesome podcast @ologies , all about nudibranchology!

Dr. Gosliner brought some interns, and for several sweet moments I got to pretend I was in a marine biology class on a field trip with an absolute expert in his field.
DREAMY!

👉I felt like the luckiest girl in the world 🌎, seeing a grand total of EIGHT sea slugs, all majestic and magical in their own weird little ways..👈
OH, and they are TINY!! See vids!

As the description for the Ologies episode says, these vibrant, gender-fluid hermaphrodites boast over 3,000 species and are famous for their “bunny horns” (rhinophores used to smell), stolen weaponry (ingested stinging cells), and solar-powered kleptoplasty.
They are found literally all over the world where there is salt water.

💦We handled them carefully in the company of experts and watched their gills come back alive under the salt water.
💦 The tide crept back in finding us waist deep and wanting more nudis!
💦I met several other nudi-enthusiasts and we bonded over our fascination and excitement!

Currently held up by a broken toe, I’ll get back out there Tidepooling for sea creatures as soon as I can!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I’ve been more and more interested in Tidepooling, as I am on the coast more often and also took a deeper dive into the creatures of the intertidal systems.
. . . especially nudibranchs (weird & wonderful sea slugs), who I hope to see with mine own eyes some day!

For now, here is a composite from 3 different visits to Duxbury Reef weeks ago in Bolinas, one of the top 2 places in Point Reyes for srsly stellar tidepooling at low tide.

I wanna thank Josh/ Toad Photography for the invite for one of these visits. I just know it will all lead to my first nudibranch sighting SOME day!!

Also, if you are on the coast and see wildlife in distress like we did —a young sea lion pup, not faring well at all😢😢😢—ALWAYS call the Marine Mammal Center in Marin County.
Among education, research and vet training, they rescue and treat marine mammals from a 600-mile stretch of California coastline and Hawaii.

Check out the tide charts and go out during negative tides if possible. Get out out there an hour before low tide, be respectful to the creatures and watch your step. Don’t be a dick.
