Happy International Women’s Day!

International women’s day helps remind us that advancing rights, justice, and action for women and girls takes continuous work. This work can start with small but impactful steps, such as recognizing women as experts of their own lives, and creating safe spaces where they feel comfortable sharing their stories and ideas.

Swipe to hear reflections from our team on women’s participation in research and programs.

As we ramp up in 2026, let’s take a look back at Empatika’s moments throughout 2025.

2025 was a meaningful year for us. We implemented a large-scale training program for caregivers of children with disabilities, working closely with early childhood education teachers and parents. Our other projects spanned a wide range of sectors and topics, such as equity assessments and sensemaking workshops for climate-related projects, exploring the role of independent midwives, and continuing some small project work with the private sector.

We continue to work on developing new and custom training products, including one covering good facilitation techniques that will be trialed soon! Our 1-day training on Participatory Practices for Better Engagement and Research will continue to be offered in 2026.

Last year also marked a transition period for Empatika, as we relocated our main office from Jakarta to Bali.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us in 2025.

We hope 2026 will bring a new spirit and more exciting innovation and collaboration.

2024 was a challenging but meaningful year for Empatika, with projects spanning social welfare, education, health, environment, and even music. Themes of empowerment, engagement, and inclusion were central to our work and findings throughout the year. As we welcome 2025, we’re excited to expand our training opportunities, helping equip more people with skills, strategies, and sensitivities for better engagement and research. We look forward to meeting new people and exploring new projects and areas in 2025!

✨ Check out the full blog, where we discuss the themes, insights, and other activities that defined our 2024 at bit.ly/empatika-2024-reflection

This includes, among others, insights on empowering people with relevant support and building self-confidence; engaging with people in their own environments; and how we included participants such as out of school girls and their mothers in the research and solutions process.

An update from our research teams in Bone, South Sulawesi and Rembang, East Java, who recently conducted data collection for the endline study of UNICEF's Adolescent Girls' Program. This program aims to provide multi-sectoral support to adolescent girls in Islamic boarding schools and informal education centers to enhance students’ participation and life skills, improve their access to sanitation, and help protect them from abuse and violence.

In addition to surveys, our research team facilitated participatory focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with educators and adolescent girls, as well as Photovoice sessions with adolescent girls. Through this participatory photography method, adolescent girls were asked what comes to mind when they think about 21st century skills, menstrual health, or child protection. This provided an opportunity for the girls to express themselves, as well as helping us to see the program through their eyes.

Highlighting the role of women and girls, as well as gender-related impacts is an important part of promoting equity and inclusion. We believe that one way we can empower women and girls is by amplifying their voices, and through the use of sensitive and participatory methods that involve them directly in the research process and as part of solutions generation. Empatika has been committed to this through a wide range of projects covering topics such as entrepreneurship and leadership, sexual and reproductive health, education, maternal health, and the prevention of religious violence.

Rural women play a critical role in the sustainability of their communities. However, their involvement in wider decision-making processes is often hindered by structural barriers and social norms which sideline women or limit their participation (UN Women).

We can help address this problem by ensuring their active participation in research and solutions development. This #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen, let’s recognize their invaluable contributions to addressing community and worldwide challenges!

To support children’s literacy skills in Indonesia, the Tanoto Foundation has implemented the “Pengembangan Inovasi untuk Kualitas Pembelajaran” (PINTAR or Development of Quality Learning Innovation) program, which focuses on enhancing the quality of learning and school leadership in Indonesia.

Last year Empatika was commissioned by the Tanoto Foundation to gather insights to help inform the PINTAR program and provide broader support to improve student literacy skills. This study was conducted through a combination of participatory focus group discussions (pFGDs), semi-structured interviews, and school observations with students, teachers, and school principals. Interactivity and hands-on activities were key features of the pFGDs, not only to aid in exploration of the study topics, but also as part of creating enthusiasm and a safe environment where the student participants didn’t need to worry about there being right or wrong answers.

Data was collected from 12 primary and junior secondary schools, including both low and high performing schools (according to literacy scores in the Ministry of Education’s Rapor Pendidikan) in East Kalimantan, Central Java, and Jambi provinces, including both partner and non-partner schools of the PINTAR program.

Findings from this study focused on school-based factors and supporting elements, including both hindering factors and enabling environments. Slide left to see some of the key insights!

45.2% of Indonesia’s over 26.1 million citizens living in poverty reside in urban areas. Within this group of urban poor are socially vulnerable groups known as Pemerlu Pelayanan Kesejahteraan Sosial (PPKS), many who work on the street and live nearby in poor communities.

One of the primary challenges in providing support to improve the welfare of PPKS communities has been their tendency to return to working on the streets after receiving training or guidance, such as through government social rehabilitation programs. Meanwhile, little research has been done to explore the complex economic and social challenges they face that often lead them back to the streets. @acceleratorlabs engaged Empatika to help fill this gap for a recent study that explored the experiences of PPKS, and in particular, the factors that shape their motivation and decision making.

As we have seen from other research, people facing stigma and marginalization are often more reluctant to trust strangers. To ensure that street workers felt comfortable talking with us and participating in the study, during an initial scoping phase we had informal discussions with street workers in different parts of Jakarta. These conversations helped us gain insights about recruitment and begin building rapport with potential participants. These efforts, along with the informal setting and approach of the participatory focus group discussions (pFGDs) we held with participants helped build trust that promoted open sharing about participants’ lives on the streets, including their challenges and aspirations. In total, 22 street workers from diverse backgrounds joined the pFGDs.

Insights from this study are intended to support UNDP Accelerator Labs to support PPKS and facilitate collaborative engagement among government, MSMEs, and CSOs to empower PPKS communities.
