I held back on doing promo for this song due to the current state of things happening to South African women and children. I did not want the focus to be on anything else. Justice, peace, equity, equality, and inclusion are things I am passionate about. Women and children should not have to live in fear every day! Women and children should live free and be able to do things with peace of mind! As men, we need to do better and call out our friends, family members, and other men who have abusive tendencies or ideologies! IDGAF! With @retrovibe_sa, is officially out on all platforms! my third album is out in less than 24 hours. this record was borne from a deep pain and trauma that i was going through in march, and i transmuted into a record about love, hope and JOY. the magnificent @ryanmarshallstudio came on board and we worked on the bulk of it together. then the gem that is @rare_weather came on board, too, and also shared his studio space where we recorded strings, horns, all the additional vocals. a plethora of musicians gave their valuable time and energy to this music both near and far. @pvinerecords believed in this music as soon as i sent the demos via DM. @peermusic have ALWAYS believed in me, and i'm forever grateful. i am still going through the motions and feeling very afraid to be visible, but i'd be doing a complete disservice to all of the people who poured their talents and love to this album. it is bigger than me. i hope this music can impact your lives positively. please share with the folks you love. ON RECORD // PROFILE 001 THE STORY THEY DIDN’T SEE Some of the most important performances never make the running order. Hours before BREAKING NEWS opened its doors, the opening act for the evening withdrew due to unforeseen circumstances. Months of planning suddenly hinged on a single question: Who could step in? The answer wasn’t backstage. He was standing in the crowd. Having crossed paths at previous events, we asked Toby From 59th a simple question: May you please help us? Without hesitation, he and his team got to work. A setlist was assembled on the spot. Music was gathered. A USB was borrowed. Within minutes, they were ready to open the inaugural edition of BREAKING NEWS. It wasn’t a performance built around spectacle. It was built around trust. An enigmatic and introspective rapper from Johannesburg’s West Rand, Toby From 59th approaches hip hop as a craft as well a method of self-exploration. His work explores grief, hope, euphoria and existentialism with deliberate honesty, therefore, treating every record as an opportunity to confront difficult questions rather than avoid them. Whether through Rice Grains, Glow Up featuring Hanna, or his appearance on Oriiginelle’s Jack & Jill, his catalogue reflects an artist committed to intentionality over immediacy and substance over noise. Looking back, his performance became more than an opening set. It became the first reminder of what BREAKING NEWS strives to represent - a community where artists show up for one another, where opportunity arrives without warning and where the stories worth remembering are often the ones that almost never happened. Some headlines are written long before they happen. Others are written in real time.
