PAUSA / STARE reimagines the @kbshowhouse kitchen as the Italian caffè – the center of social life. Here, a "pausa" is more than a coffee break; it's a daily ritual, a nexus for gossip and chance encounters, a moment to observe and be observed, and a stage for all manner of attitudes and styles.

Commanding the narrow room, the "banco" unfolds as a sculptural composition of two contrasting @artistic_tile quartzites meticulously fabricated by @vistastonesurfaces. A polished volume of explosive Patagonia gives way to a quieter expanse of honed Naica, their intersecting geometries choreographing the kitchen’s overlapping rituals of cooking, gathering, eating and unwinding.

Arts in the kitchen are sourced by @shwntng: coffee is taken casually on 3-D printed stools by @dirkvanderkooij, cushioned in @casamance_official velvet by @prestigefd. @kawabi 's paper-and-walnut Legume Pendant casts a warm glow above @thelucieclaudia 's polished steel box holding glass flowers. @aeri__go 's organic “crevice vase” holds a dried arrangement by @berry.homebk. On the wall, sheathed in @calicowallpaper , @jakecoan 's brass with red paper leaf floor lamp glows beside @kikigoti 's Thallo Mirror in hand-worked Italian glass, its aqueous forms a tribute to feminine mystique. At the end of the sink counter, @serrastuff 's Mannequin Lamp – sand-cast aluminum, rough outside, polished within – channels Giorgio Morandi's ghostly mannequin busts.

Behind the work counter, a mirrored backsplash by @glassolutions_unlmtd dissolves the limits of the narrow room, multiplying the stone and @bilottakitchens blue-green stained oak and lacquer millwork into an overlapping composition of forms. Like those lining so many Italian bars, it introduces an element of social theater: the pleasure of seeing and being seen, of catching one’s own reflection or another’s glance across the room.

PAUSA / STARE imagines the kitchen as an anchor to the movement of daily life – a place for ritual and spontaneity, efficiency and indulgence, intimacy and spectacle. A place to pass through, but also to pause, to stay.

A view from every angle in our Southampton waterfront home design project.

From the striking modern architecture to the poolside deck overlooking the water, this home was designed to make the most of its extraordinary setting.

We created a relaxed yet sophisticated poolside spot to lounge and take in the sweeping views. The floor to ceiling windows open up the interior to the surrounding landscape, offering a glimpse of the kitchen beyond and its incredible custom sculptural light fixture by John Procario, represented by @toddmerrillstudio.

See more of this project, featured on the cover of the September issue of HC&G @cottagesgardens. Read the full story, “On Tranquil Seas,” on @cottagesgardens and at the link in my bio.

Molly Hatch is turning a museum gallery into a jewelry box — and inviting you to step inside.

Opening October 17 at Fuller Craft Museum, Molly Hatch: Agency is a site-specific installation created for the museum’s soaring Atrium Gallery. Oversized ceramic bows, snakes, swallows, arrows, and celestial forms, each hand-thrown and hand-painted, draw on Victorian jewelry motifs historically tied to prescribed notions of femininity and male ownership, and recast them as declarations of independence, resilience, and collective strength.

In her words, @mollyhatchstudio is reclaiming that symbolism “as symbols of feminist strength and resilience.”

Her work is in the permanent collections of the @highmuseumofart and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (@mbamtl), and she has created nearly 15 installations for Tiffany & Co. Blue Box Cafés (@blueboxcafenyc) around the world. Agency was made specifically for @fullercraft and remains on view through October 1, 2028.

Hear from Molly Hatch about the ideas and process behind the installation on opening day: Saturday, October 17, 3–5 PM. Registration recommended — link in bio.

A layered living room with water as its muse.

Water-inspired blues set a serene tone throughout the space, beginning with a custom silk @therugcompany rug, while Morten Stenbæk’s sculptural coffee table from @toddmerrillstudio introduces a wave-like form inspired by the movement of the surf.

A plush @minotti_spa sofa anchors the room, while statement swivel chairs from @therhugheslifestyle, dressed in striking @romo_fabrics, complete a space that draws from the colors, movement, and waterfront setting just beyond the windows.

As seen in “On Tranquil Seas,” in the September issue of HC&G @cottagesgardens. See more of this Southampton waterfront home at the link in my bio.

OBJECTS OF DESIGN

Art isn’t an accessory in PAUSA / STARE—it’s part of the architecture of the space. From sculptural lighting and hand-blown glass flowers to unexpected objects, reflective surfaces, and collectible pieces, each element was chosen to bring personality, color, and a sense of discovery to the kitchen. Together, they blur the line between art and function, creating moments that invite you to pause, look closer, and linger a little longer. Because a kitchen can be beautifully functional—and still be a place for art, expression, and a little surprise.

As the days get shorter, lighting become even more important for creating spaces. I designed my Geo light as a wall sculpture that brings an illuminating glow to a room. By commission @toddmerrillstudio #lighting #walllighting #ceramiclighting
