🍎🎨 Calling all K–12 Art Teachers!

Looking to bring more confidence, creativity, and success to your ceramics curriculum? Whether you're introducing clay for the first time or looking to strengthen an existing program, Clay in the Classroom is a four-day intensive designed specifically for educators.

Led by artist and educator Tom Doyle, this hands-on workshop goes beyond making pottery. Together we'll explore how to build engaging, successful clay units from the ground up, including:

✨ Clay and kiln management
✨ Teaching handbuilding techniques with confidence
✨ Project planning and lesson prototyping
✨ Strategies for managing ceramics in a classroom setting
✨ Resources, samples, and ideas you can take straight back to your students

Throughout the week you'll make test pieces, discuss what works (and what doesn't), and gain a deeper understanding of ceramics as both a material and a teaching tool.

📅 July 14–17
🕙 10:00 AM–3:00 PM
📍 Material Things | North Brentwood, MD
💲$450

If you've been wanting to make your ceramics units more engaging—or finally feel confident teaching with clay—this intensive is for you.

Many schools offer professional development funding for workshops like this—check with your administration!

Tag an art teacher who would love this! 🍎✨

@wildsidemediaco caught up with @materialthingsstudio co-founders @_katiealdworth_ and @_francro_, and artist @ceriann_price, about their participation in the 2026 Gateway Arts District Open Studios Tour (OST) next Saturday, May 9 from 12-5 p.m. in the Gateway Arts District’s four neighborhoods: Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville.

We also picked their brains about why the North Brentwood, Maryland-based clay, wood and metal studio and educational space plays an integral role in the @mygatewayarts community.

Check out what they had to say here, and stay tuned for snippets from our conversations with @pyramidatlantic and @joesmovement.

Visit gatewaycdc.org/ost2026 to learn more about the @gatewayost on May 9 at various locations within the Gateway Arts District.

Learn more about Material Things Studio at materialthingsstudio.com and make sure to visit them on the Gateway OST next weekend.

Two members of the Haystaff just returned from the 60th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (@nceca) Conference in Detroit, Michigan, feeling inspired! ✨

Programs + Studio Director Anna Lehner and Studio Coordinator Brad Willis enjoyed jam-packed days filled with presentations, exhibitions, and excursions into the community, including Pewabic Pottery (@pewabic), Cranbrook Art Museum (@cranbrookartmuseum), The Heidelberg Project (@heidelbergproj), and the Detroit Artists Market (@detroitartistsmarket). There were many happy reunions over the whirlwind four days!

Brad was also one of three panelists on “Clay Doctors,” a problem-solving conference session dedicated to questions, information, and knowledge sharing about clay, clay bodies, and the challenges they can present.

NCECA 2026 started off with a bang with another stellar @goodhabitpotteryco pop up! Thank you so much for coming, for chatting, and for taking pots home! I’m so happy to have been part of @theclaystudiophl Small Favors, to share about this amazing studio which has been my home for the last few years, and to show with @northernclaycenter who announced their lineup for this year’s American Pottery Festival with this fabulous banner! Here are a few highlights. Endless awe and appreciation for clay community! 🌟 Till next time!!

✨Haystack✨

I had the opportunity to go to haystack this past September. I was their metals studio tech for their Open Studio Residency!! It was such a magical time. I met so many amazing people (I could only tag 20) and I even got to realize some pieces I had in mind. I am so grateful for all the people I met and the time there is always transformative for me. I went to haystack for the first time in 2023 and it really changed the way I saw myself as an artist and as a maker. So to come back was a full circle gift for me.

I miss all of the residents and fellow techs so much I wish we never had to say goodbye😔 till we meet again 🫶🏽

I worked on this collage retrospectively and I had sooo many photos that I got more experimental with it. I am wondering where these collages will go…. Hope you enjoy!
