I used to live in New York City and now I live in Roswell, New Mexico. I like both but miss Chinese food.

Tom Martinelli has been working with transparency and opacity for years. The work ranges from high contrast to the most subtle shifts in color. How it looks at midnight is just as impactful. Day 2 untitled art Houston

What's it like on the red carpet? Amazing, but honestly, the best part was the community 🧡

Tamanie has built something truly special. ISSA is an organization that is so artist-focused, and now 30,000 strong. Being surrounded by songwriters who cheer each other on, share their stories, and lift each other up is what made the night unforgettable.

Grateful to be part of it! Songwriters: what's the best community moment you've ever had?

I wrote about this work on paper I have on my wall and posted it somewhere on social media years ago. I post it yet again >>>>>

I never met Miguel. He was married to a friend of mine named Katherine. Miguel made a lot of drawings in prison as he was awaiting execution. He spent a number of years on death row in Texas. I don’t know much about Miguel or much detail about what actually happened. What I do know is that Miguel held up a grocery store and the robbery went bad and a person was killed. I don’t think it was ever in the plan to end someone’s life.

From what Katherine told me he was gracious about the destiny he made for himself – how quick and clean and premature his transition from this world to the possible next was going to be. She said on execution day Miguel was present and spry. He hopped up on the table where the event was about to take place, looked at her sitting on the other side of a glass wall and smiled… he was all there.

When I saw Miguel’s drawings I was moved. They all reflected a meditation practice he began in prison and sustained till the end. I especially liked the eye and the cat. Katherine gave it to me. It reminds me of that soft-edged space that sometimes happens when I first wake up – aware of an ‘otherness’ but not knowing who I am or where I am – the tiny moment before all the details and names for things come into being and fall into place. I like to imagine the eye and the cat have quietly materialized in each others presence and will just as easefully fade back when the time comes.
