In Dzongkha, the national language of Bhutan 🇧🇹, Matsutake mushrooms are known as Sangay Shamu, or “Buddha’s mushroom.” They are an important part of Bhutanese cuisine and a valuable resource for local harvesters. Bhutan’s rich culture of relationships between people and fungi also includes Ophiocordyceps sinensis, a parasitic fungus found in the Himalayan highlands 🏔️. Legally harvested since 2004, it is one of the most expensive traditional medicine ingredients. How do ancestral relationships between people and fungi evolve in a country that remained closed to tourism until 1974? Can this traditional mycological knowledge be passed on to future generations? And how does climate change affect local and traditional societies for whom fungi are central to their culture, gastronomy, and economy? These are some of the questions we hope to answer in collaboration with local people through our Elders Program, which took us to Bhutan this year together with @cosmosheldrake, @merlin.sheldrake, and @toby.kiers from @spununderground. All our ethnomycological interviews aim to document and preserve traditional relationships with fungi under sovereignty agreements, while sharing them with the local communities that hold the knowledge so they can safeguard it. 📸 Tomás Munita @tomas.munita

One of the main reasons I’m here. In a very remote Andean hamlet, there’s a celebration to honor San Miguelito. The location is wildly, happily isolated. It takes crossing high mountain passes and hours of swerving dirts roads. Once you’ve struggled your way up, you will arrive at an unremarkable collection of homes around a plaza. The adobe homes look up at a pristine white church. One day a year, thousands of people from across Peru flock here. San Miguelito is “muy milagroso” and swarms of devotees bring song, color, faith and movement. I’m here to try and hold it. Thanks to @tomas.munita and @puttutu for finding these gems.

You are not a spectator of Patagonia. You share its rhythms, its trades, and the people who inhabit it. If that is what you are looking for, that is what we offer. #patagoniachile #torresdelpainechile #puertonatales #horseriding

The January 2026 issue of National Geographic @natgeo accompanied me on my flight to Seoul and, as always, opened up fascinating windows into the world. Three articles in particular were very fascinating to me. The first by Camille Bromley explored alpha female meerkats in South Africa and the extraordinary lengths they go to protect their offspring. Thomas Peschak’s photographs brought readers astonishingly close to their world. The second followed Paul Kvinta’s attempt to find the rightful home for a Maya pot inherited from his grandfather. What began as a question of ownership became a reflection on identity, heritage and belonging. The third article, written by Gloria Liu with photographs by Tomas Munita, introduced the profession of trail building. I was fascinated to learn that great trails depend not only on geology and engineering, but also on psychology. As one trail designer put it: “The art becomes shaping people’s desires instead of thwarting it.” Having recently climbed Seongsan Ilchulbong in Jeju, I could immediately recognise these principles at work—seeing how the trail made the ascent feel manageable while revealing fresh views at just the right moments. More than anything, this issue reminded me why I keep returning to National Geographic: it satisfies curiosity while deepening appreciation for the people who help us understand and experience the world. As always, I am grateful for the writers, photographers and researchers who help us see the world through new eyes. I’ve shared a longer reflection on this issue on Substack for anyone interested in the full read. #NationalGeographic #LifelongLearning #CuriousMind #TravelReading #ReadingReflections
