@joemcevillymusic and I have just arrived home to Madrid blooming with spring after four months at sea on the fourth largest cruise ship in the world. Now back in my own bed in La Latina, it already feels like a dream 💭 but I’m jet lagged and nostalgic so here are my musings on the experience…

Taking on this contract as a jazz singer was a a big decision. The deal was that we could live and work on Harmony of the Seas between December to April, play 4 sets a day, 6 days a week and travel the same 7 day itinerary around Honduras, Mexico and Texas. None of us had ever played that much before so we knew having enough repertoire and good technique to not injure ourselves was important. Joe, Tom and I spent the three months leading up to the contract preparing, learning and rehearsing songs in Madrid while sending charts, arrangements and recordings to Eric in Valencia. We only met as a full band once before embarking.

When the day finally came to leave, we had a rocky start with a big storm in London delaying our flight meaning we missed the boat in Texas. They flew us to Honduras to meet the ship but at the airport, Tom was denied entry for not having a visa and got deported back to the US (ask him about it, it’s a funny story in hindsight 😂). Nearly a week late, the quartet was reunited in Mexico. Then the adventure really began.

Ship life is so different to land life. So many rules based on your rank: what you can do, where you can go and what you can wear. We slept in tiny little cabins where you could touch the walls with outstretched arms, ate meals in the crew mess (endless curries) and we “went out” to a nautical themed crew bar on deck 5 with cheap drinks.

During port days, we were free to explore so I spend most of my days in Roatan and Mexico snorkelling, eating tacos and dodging the tourist vendors. Joe and I also got our scuba diving certificates after falling in love with the underwater world 🤿

In the evenings, we played 396 sets over 102 days, covering 223 songs. That’s 300+ hours—over 12 straight days of music. We crammed years of performance into four months, playing night after night in a floating park in the middle of the sea.
