Posting this so when I make it to heaven with @tomaswrites_ I don’t have to hear him say "So I wasn’t even worth a IG carousel?" and so I don’t have to respond "You lucky they ain’t put the angel wings on you on the funeral program"

Cause that is very much how our conversations went. He would fake play serious with me, and then I would try to do it back, but i’m so goofy we would both burst out laughing. He would give me a hug, and then we’d launch into conversations bigger than life.

Personally, I feel like if that was gonna end on June 16, he could have given me a heads up first. We’ll talk about that too when I get up there.

Tomàs and I are were apart of this group of first generation misfits at UChicago. I actually had a hard time finding photos of he and I where we weren’t committing total debauchery. Gotta keep my boys internet footprint clean post mortem. Amongst all of my early young adult angst, and hyper activity, he was always a grounding, gentle force. Let’s sit down, let’s slow down, let’s catch up. Let’s do simple things together: go grocery shopping, find a boost mobile because he broke his phone, exchange stories about being from Haiti and Brazil. I needed that. I needed someone to remind me to not take myself to seriously. And after we graduated, I needed someone who knew of my very ferocious journey to adulthood, and say « Im proud of you ».

Time and distance brought us to different places. Tomàs became a bi coastal elite as he called it, and I graduated from Chicago transplant to local. But I do have to say, I wish we’d spent more time in Columbus. I grabbed some food before the memorial service. After all the arguments we had about the which city had the best food, he might of been right about them tacos.

I spent ten hours on the road to Ohio trying to figure out how fast I could process Tomàs dying, so I could function enough to go to work, be a good friend, feed my cat, be a normal functioning human. He would have wanted me to laugh a little. Say something so I wouldn’t take myself so serious. And remind me that there is no rush. Sit down, slow down, and everything else will catch up. Long live Tomàs Miriti Pacheco ☀️

As some of you may know, we lost a beloved community member last week. Tomás Miriti Pacheco was simply a profound presence, as in he was profoundly present. He met each of us where we were at, with emotional openness, intellectual clarity, unexpected humor, and unfailing kindness. He challenged us all with the same benevolence and held us to the highest standard without ever making us doubt we could reach it. This loss has struck us deeply, and we miss him desperately.

We know he affected every community and person he touched, from his hometown of Columbus to our own NYC, and no social media caption could possibly pay adequate tribute to his uniquely beautiful spirit. In acknowledgement of this we are opening our doors this Saturday to anyone who would like to join us in honoring his memory.

We will build a small altar for him together and share words of remembrance, before a dedicated block of radio time where we’ll listen to and read his work as well as some of his favorite music and more memories. If you have any photos, recordings, or writings of Tomás to share, our email is listed in the second slide.

With so much love for Tomás,
8 Ball Community
