The Hastings Contraption!
This has been so much fun.... We discovered absolutely how much automata we could make in a week, living off coffee, take away and old boxes! Thanks to @tomhaneyartwork @carloszapataautomata and @josephwallacedirector for this brilliant collaboration. And to @cabmech for hosting us and hopefully finding us moderately entertaining!

The big reveal. Was a huge success. Each of us talked about our work and how it related to collaboration and this piece specifically. Then after revealing the Contraption, we talked about our process and about the week we just spent together. A bit of Q&A, then we let people interact with the pieces - turning the cranks and pushing the levers.
We have to thank Sarah and Max at @cabmech for all they have done to help us. ❤️❤️❤️

A sneak preview - but we are not finished yet! We’re going to put 3 or 4 hours in tomorrow morning, just to add some fabulous touches. All the automata is working, and now we’ll focus on aesthetics and making our Contraption as amazing as possible. Thirteen hours today, plus we had help from Lou Lou @reallouloucousin and the women at @cabmech - Sarah and Max - Thank you all so much! ❤️

No, there isn’t. 💪💪💪💪 Day 4 (yes, I skipped Day 3 - we’re far too busy) Fi carving, Carlos painting, Joseph painting and carving. And the last two figures are mine. It’s coming together - but of course there’s never enough time to do what you want to do.
And only one person super-glued their fingers together. I won’t say who, but it wasn’t me, or Fi or Carlos. 👌👌👌

Day 2 of Contraption making. Our cart got here early - and Joseph and I got on it immediately - not literally. We cut off the sides, and added a wooden frame to mount the plywood to. Fi and Joseph attached that plywood soon after. Then we each got onto the many tasked that need to get done. So far, so good. And I can’t believe how much we progress each day. 💪💪
More tomorrow, and Thursday, and Friday.

And I think there’s like 3 tickets left for Saturday’s big reveal. 👍😊❤️

Day one of our Hastings Contraption project. Scouring junk shops, vintage and antique stores - in and out of Hastings today. We had very good luck, and we all are pretty much on track as how to move forward. Looking forward to tomorrow. Stay tuned……
It’s going to be something. 😳😳😳

also on Day 3 Tom and I talked about a Red Riding Hood figure that I want to make.

The first image is my notebook with my notes from that day and a concept image of the figure I want to make.

The second image is the forest where Red will live. There will be many wolves in the forest. The wolves, are of course, a metaphor for ableism.

The third image are the artifacts from that day about a possible approach for the arms. Maybe carve them in position - glue two pieces of basswood together how you want the arm bent - and then carve. The hand is an example of carving the hand in the position that the fingers need to be on the wheel.

Tom's Wisdom on image 4. @tomhaneyartwork

Image 5 is the front of the Red Riding hood piece as it is today.

The last image is a mock up of the figures that I want on the front side of the piece.

on Day 3 of my workshop with Tom Haney we started working on the figure for the rough prototype.

For my first automata I would like to make an archbishop giving a benediction to this painting from my graduate show in 1994. It is from the "Dedicated to St. Praxedes" series that I did during the 1993-94 school year. It is an oil painting on board with gold leaf and is 4 x 5 inches. This will give you a sense of the scale of the piece. This is a studio shot of the piece so far.

The first image is a mockup of what I want the final piece to look like.

The second image is my notebook with the image of the archbishop and our prototype of the shoulder. We used two screw-eyes and embedded it into the arm and body. For purposes of a first prototype, this wasn't a bad approach, but I want to spend some time figuring out how I want to make that shoulder work.

Tom suggested that the piece should use one lever to make both of the arms move up and down.

The third image is - of course - Tom's Wisdom that he imparted that day.

We have just released our interview with automata artist Tom Haney as well as a companion short film that compliments the podcast.
We joined Tom in his Studio in Black Mountain North Carolina and had a chance to see the full range of his creations, powered by hand cranks, electric motors and amazing ingenuity. And learned how to pronounce that difficult word Automata. Listen carefully to this episode and you too will be a cool cat and be able to pronounce it flawlessly.
You can listen on the podcast page of the website and on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and you can watch the film Why Make channel on Youtube or the video page of the website

Day 2 of my workshop with Tom Haney was all about materials. I posted a few examples here. Tom is a font of information about the materials needed to create automata.

Here is an incomplete list for anyone who wants a beginning list - but I recommend that you make the trip to Black Mountain to learn from the master. There are many details about how to use these materials together to build automata.

1. Drill gauge
2. Brass Tubing
3. Steel rods
4. Glue: Starbond
5. 3 in 1 oil
6. Hone for blades
7. Polishing compound
8. Music wire
9. Basswood
10. Belting/Pulley cord
11. Collars
12. Black Fishing and Trolling Line

As I think over what Tom taught me during the workshop, I am getting flashbacks to junior high and high school science classes. I wonder if automata would be a good way to capture the imagination of the students and make it real for them at this young age. Art and science need not be taught as opposites or binaries to each other.
