💥 OPENING #TomHowse

We are thrilled to announce the first solo exhibition of British artist Tom Howse in Portugal, opening on March 11, 2023.

➡ The exhibition presents a new body of work that follows two distinct artistic approaches: one focusing on interiors and the other on exterior spaces, evoking the psychological states of being alone but also, surrounded by a community, loved ones, family and friends.

Tom Howse
Dear Egg…
2022
Acrylic on canvas
130 × 170 cm

Tom Howse was born in 1988 in Chester, UK. He graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2011 and currently lives and works in London. Howse’s works take form in folklore and myths, delineating nature and daily life from a surrealist point of view, which visualizes the absurdity of stories without losing innocence. Joining together, plants, animals, and humans in his paintings may appear amiable at first sight, yet the fictional characters and combination of prehistoric or allegorical forms portray them as aliens. Threaded with surreal landscapes as well as interior sceneries in their two-dimensionality, the paintings offer a scope to observe the candid engagements among the characters that the viewer may find connected to, as they counter the realistic representations of subjects in history and picturesque paintings. As a continuation of attention to demotic interactions over divinity and sublimity in Howse’s practice, this series of works weaves the mundane narratives into the otherworldly natural fields in addition to his framing of such depictions in everyday sceneries and inhabited landscapes.

LINSEED is delighted to participate in 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗦𝗚 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 from January 11 to January 15, 2023, at booth 𝗙𝗥𝟬𝟲, presenting three artists from Asia and beyond: 𝗦𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 (b.1980, Germany), 𝗧𝗼𝗺 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗲 (b.1988, UK), and 𝗟𝗶 𝗛𝗲𝗶 𝗗𝗶 (b.1997, China). Through the artists’ experimentation and rediscoveries of modern and classical iconographies, contemporary cultures, primitive emotions, and instinctive desires, this presentation confronts the previously constructed views with delicate and illusionistic imaginations.

Meanwhile, LINSEED will participate in two other specially curated sectors at ART SG 2023, presenting Chinese artist 𝗭𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗭𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻’s newly created painting “Shape of Freeness” in 𝗡𝗘𝗪/𝗡𝗢𝗪, and British-Singaporean artist 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻’s short film “Awakening Ceremony” in 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗠 (at ArtScience Museum).

Tom Howse
Pigeon Grin Simulacrum, 2021
Acrylic on flax
220 × 350 cm

Tom Howse was born in 1988 in Chester, UK. He graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2011 and currently lives and works in London. Howse’s paintings balance between realism and fantasy. With his unique anthropological perspective, his works explore what the artist describes as the dichotomy between our quest to know and our fallibility to comprehend, explaining the mysteries of the cosmos, the earth, humanity, and the existence of natural phenomena that has bewildered humankind since ancient times.

Taking its form in folklore and myths, Howse is interested in how humans are drawn towards explanations found within these stories and how they are used to soothe the fear of the unknown. Howse’s aesthetics is often based on nature and daily life; the lucid worlds he visualized reveal a touch of absurdity without losing innocence, lending to the experimental and the otherworldly. The perspective in his works is utilized via shifting flat planes, opposing a singular vanishing point that allows for a feeling of moving through a singular world. As we subsequently cross through into a whole new universe at each dimension of the paintings’ existence, Howse’s works trace the interweaving among lives and the infinite universe.
