Back to where it all began.

We recently returned to @florenceacademyofart to celebrate the publication of Drawing in Space with @tominflorence, FAA students, colleagues, alumni and friends.

Florence is where Rob developed and taught the method for more than two decades, and where Poppy first encountered it as a sculpture student.

Returning together with the finished book, and sharing it with a new generation of sculptors, was a very special moment for us both.

More than 700 books have now been dispatched worldwide. Seeing them arrive in studios, ateliers, libraries and homes, and receiving your photographs and messages, has been wonderful.

Thank you to everyone who helped us bring this book into the world, and to everyone who joined us in Florence!

Recently at the FAA Gallery, students, faculty, and FAA founder Daniel Graves gathered for “Rembrandt: FAA Perspectives,” a lecture exploring the enduring relevance of Rembrandt through painting, drawing, and printmaking. Across a series of presentations, speakers reflected on the artist’s continual search for emotional truth through observation, experimentation, and material understanding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Recent FAA Graduate Pablo Brandt discussed his experience copying a portrait from the @theleidencollection Leiden Collection, examining Rembrandt’s use of compressed values and psychological focus. Principal Instructor Issie Weir explored the artist’s drawing practice through his studies of Hansken the elephant, while Principal Instructor Matteo Taverna traced the evolution of Rembrandt’s etching process across multiple states. Toby Neve, Intermediate program Director, examined the material science behind Rembrandt’s use of lead white and the physical character of his paint handling, and Daniel Graves concluded with a personal reflection on encountering a Rembrandt self-portrait as a young artist and the profound impact it had on his life and work.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Accompanying the lecture was a small exhibition of works connected to the presentations, including original etchings by Rembrandt himself, offering visitors the rare opportunity to encounter the artist’s prints firsthand in The FAA Gallery!

⚜️Paper/Mirror/Paper Exhibition⚜️ One of the standout moments of the past academic year was the opening of our Paper/Mirror/Paper Alumni Exhibition showcasing self-portraits on paper! Featuring an extraordinary range of works by FAA alumni from 25 countries, the exhibition highlighted a diverse mix of mediums including charcoal, graphite, watercolor, Russian sauce, etching, and more. The result was a powerful and intimate reflection of global artistic voices, all connected through the shared language of portraiture and classical techniques. Thank you to all of our artists who submitted their work!

A selection of the artworks are still visible in the online version of the exhibition at 🔗 www.florenceacademyofart.edu/paper-mirror-paper

Just completed my third and final year of the MA in Studio Art at The Florence Academy of Art. This program gave me not only a deeper understanding of traditional atelier techniques, but also solidified my commitment to keep creating—pushing beyond comfort, always evolving.

This year, in particular, was incredibly rewarding, but it demanded everything I had mentally and physically. A true gift wrapped in challenge.

I’ve never worked alongside a more dedicated group of artists. Painting for 6+ hours a day felt like a privilege, and I’m deeply grateful to our amazing program directors and teachers who supported us every step of the way.

To have grown as a painter in the beautiful city of Florence, surrounded by such passionate people, has been an unforgettable experience.
I am specially grateful to my mom and kids who came along with me in this adventure, you gave me the energy and strength that I needed to complete this…I couldn’t have done it without you!! Thank you all 🫶🏽 love you deeply.

Last Friday marked a massive milestone: graduating from the Florence Academy of Art! I started in America, in Jersey age 19, and finished in Italy, Florence age 25. Over the past 6 years, I’ve honed my eye and artistic abilities, learning to draw and paint from life. It’s been a rollercoaster of blood, sweat, and tears, filled with countless happy moments and love. I’ve made the best friends from around the world and am incredibly grateful for the time I’ve dedicated to this disciplined form of visual art. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, friends, and mentors. I can’t wait to paint and see what’s next! 🌟 #FlorenceAcademyOfArt #graduation
